Another one to test your knowledge on no start!

Following on from my water hose and pump problems this is what is happening now:
O/D keeps coming on and off, the revs shoots up as if the clutch is slipping then comes in with a thump, when stopped would not start, the ignition stays on until I jiggle the auto gear shift, managed to start by jiggling the auto shift drove home with the speedo not working, back on drive and will not start again!
Thinking that water has got into the fuse boxes I have treated them with WD40 and changed the start inhibitor relay R11. The Question is, is there a connection that could be causing trouble between the gear shift and auto box?

I'd be checking the wiring loom in the engine bay for degradation as well, especially the part of the loom that runs through the "v" with the water pipes.

There is no obvious degradation of the loom, but I have gone over all of the loom with WD40 even the parts that is wrapped up in the casing and in particular the Central Fuse Box as I firmly believe water has got in somewhere, as it is a dry day I have now left the bonnet open, will let you know if I succeed!

Water getting in to the fuse boxes is usually caused by (a) no battery cover (b) debris blocking the drain holes in the bulkhead and thus preventing water getting away into the engine bay. The passenger side (auxiliary) box is particularly vulnerable without a battery cover. Behind the fuse box is a very large grommet which carries all the cables into the interior and the CCM, behind the glove box. Is there any sign of water getting in there? Usually manifests itself on the passenger side carpet. IF water builds up under the Auxiliary box and the grommet is not seated correctly it will run in to the car and over the CCM...not a good thing!

Also check the condition of the wiring loom which goes down to the gearbox.

Hi Guys, I am now up and running thank you all for your input.
The battery area and aux fuse box was well protected, but I still believe there was a problem with the gear shift, I probably should have taken taken the center console out or got underneath and sprayed the loom to the auto box, but I fed the WD40 pipe in alongside the shaft of the gear shift which may have done the trick.

You might like to look at This page The mechanism here is known to seize up and it just may be that the WD has done the job BUT a proper look might save further problems.

You seem to have it sorted but another cause of gears slipping then thumping into gear (esp when starting from/in cold) is low auto box oil.

Finally all my problems have been resolved now as I have had an accident and the insurance company want to write the vehicle off due to availability of parts, (face-lift bumper and headlights) this is a sad day as the accident was not my fault as luckily I had a camera in the car that has cleared me of blame.
EVERYBODY PLEASE GET YOURSELVES A CAMERA, easy to fit on the windscreen and they are only about £30
I just hope the payout will enable me to purchase another Scorpio!

Paul, if you are successful with the insurance company, let me know as I have recently had parts from a very helpful guy breaking an estate, he might still have it.
There are a few being broken on ebay.
