Title: Front Bumper 1997 Scorpio Estate Ultima
Post by exucasvu on Oct 11th, 2017, 12:15pm
I am not having much luck right now. Having just purchased a rear bumper for said vehicle, this morning some French thingy smashed my front bumper in a supermarket car park and then took off of course. Now looking for a replacement front bumper. Any colour will do but dark green is the colour of the car. If anyone has one or knows a site I can obtain a replacement (other than Spikies) could they email me ala.nb.lb@hotmail.com.
Many thanks
Alan

Alan, depending on the extent of damage a DIY repair may be possible. I recently fixed mine by using aluminium mesh and fibreglass matting from Halfords. The repair was carried out from the rear by 'melting' the mesh into the bumper with....wait for it....the handle of a tea s p o o n  heated by a blowlamp! All you need is enough heat to melt the plastic and trial and error soon sorts that out. I then applied  matting to reinforce the splits.  The mesh is great as it will form easily to any outline, such as a crease. Matting then reinforces it enabling the use of filler from the front to deal with any cosmetic cracks or to allow any missing sections to be replaced. I had the bumper finally sprayed by a bodyshop BUT all the preparation by way of priming, undercoating etc. was done by myself and a mate. If you are competent with a spray can no doubt a decent final finish with top coat and lacquer is possible.

DO NOT apply flame directly to the mesh. It will melt before your eyes!

:)  If you wonder why I had to spell S P O O N like that it is because typed normally this is what comes out! spoon

You can weld the plastic bumper with the correct type of heatgun - be careful though as they are MUCH hotter than the type used for paint stripping. Use the correct type of filler rod - ABS I think. I have successfully welded damage on a Sierra bumper in the past.
If the crack is in an area where it is double skinned or there is a box section formed by another moulding at the rear you can use expanding foam from a can to give the bumper some strength and structure.

Exactly what I did with mine to avoid cutting out a 'letterbox' section to effect a repair and having to replace it.

Thanks for your replies but the damage is severe. Cannot see any alternative other than to try and find a replacement. If anyone can point me in the direction of a possible seller would be very grateful. There seems very little about on the internet.
Another question. Would a 97 saloon front bumper fit? I believe the only difference is the foglight apertures?

Any Scorpio front bumper will fit your car.
Early type lack the vents in the lower part next to the foglamps, facelift versions have the vents.
Do you have headlamp washers ? There are some minor differences in the shape of the washer jet apertures & covers.
Foglight apertures are the same if you have just indicators or indicators & foglights.
