Right guys at the risk of seeming dim whats the maf and how do I clean it as o/d light flashing and read on a forum that cleaning it might help ???. would find any advice useful

Did mine the other day... took 10 minutes.... really easy.

Good result too, the gearchanges are now imperceptible....

OK folks

I have one fitted, but am puzzled, what impact would a faulty or dirty MAF have on my 16valve manual?

Geoff,

Good question, I think you would only get a slight lack of responsiveness. Probably not enough to notice, untill you clean your MAF maybe??

If I've got this right, MAF problems appear as auto 'box faults because the EECV uses MAF load information to decide which gear the 'box should be in. In the case of a manual these decisions are made by you, so I'd imagine slight fuelling probs would be the only side effect.

Geoff. I can tell you from experience with a 16v manual that if the MAF packs up you'll sure as hell know about it 'cos the thing will be virtually un-controllable with it trying to stall one minute and racing the next!!!. Thats what happened to me. I had no warning and although the garage tried to clean it it had failed totally. Once replaced the car was as sweet as a nut. Maybe the 'auto' boys get more symptoms because of the control system ,as suggested.

Geoff,

If you unplug your MAF and go for a little drive you will find all sorts of Idle and power problems, as if the MAF had failed completely (LOS). If the MAF is "just" dirty the slightly erroneous readings it will send to the EECV, I don't think, would be that noticable.
Clean it and see ::)
