I keep reading about looms need replacing etc. etc.
So what is it that happens. (just in case mine ever need attention).
Is the insulation that goes hard and brittle with heat and fails, is so just wrap some tape around.
But if not what is it that people are constantly on about.

If you 'keep reading about' them then you will know what the issues are.... :P

Specifically the Fuel Shut Off Loom or VSS Loom (same thing but officially called Fuel Shut Off) get baked by the engine on the top section and where it travels around the back of the engine. .. As for the 'wrap some tape around' suggestion for resolution..

Maybe... but the LT signals for the HT modules have specially screened wires to stop interference..That is why you can't just tape them up.. and it is this section that gets baked..

i knew what the issues are but not what was the cause.
still i was think that it was the heat from the engine that was ruining the insulation.
still you taught me that taping them up is no good. i will bear that in mind.
but is there no space or something to have some heat proof shielding around.
and why do looms need replacing that are not subject to heat. like i was told i need a new loom for my auto gearbox selector lights. that not heat re-lated is it.

mainly because mechanics who know little and go off hunting info .. find all the reports about ... whhooohhh ... scorpios always need looms .. everywhere .. any problem will be a loom .... ;) STN

well i just not used to having looms on my other vehicles i have owned.
I wonder why the cars where designed like this. surely the designers must have know that they would be getting hot. above the engine.

well ..they trusted the material John ... Arnitel ... and it seems to have let them down ... raychem 44 on the later ones gives no trouble and that would have been the standard had production continued .. strange though as you say .. because arnitel is supposed to cope very well with high temperatures ........
worth mentioning though that it's rarely just heat .. but often down to water leaks contaminating the wiring .. ..... STN

obviously not !

I've replaced the loom on both of my scorps

saloon has 61000 and the estate has 164000

at £90 odd quid a go.....I might add

well i learning more and more. thanks to silentthenight.
i suppose it like brake pipes. they used to rust badly but the ones on my scorpios seem to be covered in lacquer.
and those pipes that go from the auto gearbox to the oil cooler. i got mine bound in waterproof tape like duck tape. baz i believe coats his in grease.

I replaced my wiring loom too. Reason is that previously with the last owners. It had become so hot in a journy that the d**n wiring loom cought fire. Yes thats right fire.
And what did the silly previous people do?
"They taped it all up in black elctritions tape" as baz has already seen in the old pictures I have.
The car wasnt firing right or changing gear correctly. So I read the ford site and hey what did I find?
All the info I needed to change the loom.
Moral of the story is dont bodge the wiring loom.

would you say that if the car is not driven hard, like a bat out of hell and you drive more slowly, then the looms around the engine would not get so hot and therefore not break down.
or are they liable to breakdown in any circumstances.

I may be wrong, but I think personaly that the wires get so d**n hot. Because some of the wires going across the top of the engine. Mainly on the 2.3DOHC. They are lying under that huge 2.3 DOHC cover. On the top of the engine with the spark plugs and coil packs. Now theres almost no air at all can get to the fragile wires to cool them off. Or relese heat. No matter how hard you rev your engine even at idle (crawling speed) your engine will be scorching. Proberly more so when crawling in traffic.
This is proberly why mine was taken off by the previous owners. :-/

thanks for that picture that link came out. i see now there is not much room for insulation stuff to be put around. it would have to be fire proof stuff.
i going to have a peep myself now to see if mine are ok.
but you really upset me now. i was thinking it was just the cosworth that had these loom problems, but now you are telling me the 2.3 have problems as well.
anyway thanks for the inflo.
i learning more each day. the biggest thing i learnt is that i should not have brought my scorpio's.

hi baz, so all cars now adays are built the same with wiring looms and bearings etc that wear out say 50,000 miles onwards. (but a few may before.)
Some people with pots of money change their cars every three years, I can see why now.
I read you post about Rover 75 I agree.

I have been in the fortunate position that with having my own company, I could decide what I wanted to drive. I always wanted a Scorpio facelift but because I started the company after they were discontinued, I never got the chance to have a "new" one. I had in the company instead the Rover 75's, Peugeots (106, 306, 307 & 406) Mercedes A Class and C class, and two Ford Focus as well, all of them brand new. I am now of the opinion that although you get warranties with new cars, it is better to get a second hand car, top of the range, from a dealer with some form of warranty so you are protected from the financial implications of owning a "big" car. My latest Cossie cost me buttons compared to even the peugeots I had and is easier to get parts for as well believe it or not!!

One of our 307's on a 51 plate, was involved in an accident when it was 3 months old. We got it back 9 months later!! The dealer blamed the lack of supply of parts because it was a new model. A Rover 75 diesel stuck in the dealers for months because there were no clutch assemblies anywhere in the UK and the car had only done 25,000 miles as well!!

No, I think from now on it is second hand for me. I think after the Scorpio, I fancy something like an A8 or I have seen a delicious looking BMW 745 with more toys than a starship as well!!
