Hi all,

There's a thread going on on the confidential list regarding under engine trays.

I always thought these were only fitted to the 24V. Is this the case or should all Scorpios have them? My 12V hasn't.

Concensus on the purpose of the tray seems to be to stop water being forced up into the engine compartment and getting at the electrics...any other thoughts?

i have 1 on my 2.3
and there is 1 on the 24v i also have the use of at the moment

so i think the answer is yes,they should ALL have one..

I would say it is the first part of the car that goes missing when it has work done. A lot of guys simply can not be bothered to refit them or forget. I think all Scorpio's should have them.

Yes, very easy for it to go missing.

I had a service done last year at a garage which was 'highly recommended' :-/ When I went to collect the car, I was pacing around part of their workshop as mine wasn't quite ready.
I saw, lying on the workshop floor, an engine under tray. At that point, the workshop manager declared my car finished. I pointed to the tray saying that it looked like mine. But he assured me it was for a Galaxy. Hmm... seemed plausible I suppose.
OK, off home then (about 20 miles) and for the whole journey, I kept picturing that tray in my mind. As soon as I got home, I got underneath to check. Sure enough... the tray was missing! >:(
I phoned to tell them what they'd forgotten and they apologised and said "Run it back in mate". All very well, but that meant another 40 mile trip just for that. AND it was raining. And thats not good. I think it keeps a certain amount of spray from getting to some of the components.

Get one on it if you can.

there has been talk of a second tray ?? ..the clips, holes and cut outs are there ...but has anyone ever seen one ?? ........ STN

Not seen it myself but as you say, there would be room for one.
After all, this one only covers from front bumper back to the front crossmember.

Hiya Paul !! ... yes ..unlike the garage you dealt with ... my new lads are always coming and asking where the SECOND tray that came off this car is !! .. cos they can see the clips etc for it .. cries in unison from all around the garage echo out .. THERE ISN'T ONE !! ... maybe one day there will be ...haha ... STN

Any ideas how much FMD would be after....bearing in mind it aint April 1st anymore ;D ;D

REf. Extra tray,I think the early ones were in 2 parts.
I,m pretty sure mine was,until I hit a bollard!
The new one was in one peice,the old one ended up in several peices along with the bumper. ???

THERE, now I,ve admitted it! :-/

Don't even think about FMD for this one - get one from a breakers and pull off the wet smelly felt that is stuck to it - that just holds water and rots the power steering pipes that lie touching it most of the time. A scrapyard shouldn't charge more than a few pounds.

The sump tray recently saved me a few quid when , due to a sheared retaining bolt , the drive belt tensioner fell off in transit. Had the tray been missing I would of had to shell out for a new pulley and belt.

Theres a couple in at Autosave in Bury near Manchester. The number is on the main site, but ask for Chris as he is the guy I always deal with and he is pretty reasonable. I saw them today when I went for a battery Clamp for Craig!!

Steve, are you sure about this? I would like to take mine off, because it's dirty and always wet, but I can't help thinking that maybe it's there for a reason.
Are you sure it's safe to remove it and just keep the plastic part of the undertray?

The good thing about the position of the tray is that it does not require removal to get access to the sump plug, this is important as your friendly local mechanic , who can strip and assemble a V8 in an hour , NEVER EVER put it back correctly. :P

Personally i dont like them, as they hide any engine drips. I would rather see the drops of oil/water on the ground so that i know there is a leak and can then investigate. But thats just me!! ::)

The undertray is a good thing. In fact, I think a steel undertray would be even better than a plastic one on rough roads (we have plenty of them around here :)). I have no intention to remove the undertray completely.
It's just the spongy lining that bothers me, because it's dirty, ugly and it's almost always wet. What does it do? Why is it there?
Is it safe to remove it?
