Title: Identification of Speaker Wires
Post by DJWerkz on May 17th, 2006, 1:51pm
I have been re-wiring my car lately as I have had the dash completely out and I thought I would share my finidngs with you:

I wanted to remove the Ford amplifier from behind the glove box, all unnecessary grey ribbon type audio cables and separate all speaker wires into their own shrink wrapped harness.

Plug C629 that connects into the Ford amplifier contains all the speaker wires and I had previouslt consulted with the following web page (thanks to Daven) for guidance:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/radioto995.htm

However, I can report that the wires were not connected up to plug C629 in the same order as appears on the page above.

This was easily rememdied with the dash out as I just employed the old trick of using a 1.5v AA type battery and pressed the postive and negative cable of each speaker pair on the relevant +/- end of the batttery which gives you an audible noise from the appropriate speaker (this can also be used to determine polarity of your speaker wires too - if you have the positive speaker cable on the + end of the battery your speaker drive should be moving outwards, if you have it the wrong way round the driver will move inwards).  Then it's just a simple matter of labelling each wire.

You might also be interested to know that the plug C629 while having very minimal play in it if you tackle this with the dash still in place, the wiring harness actually just runs across the top of the heater box to a cream coloured oval type connector which is clipped to the metal frame on the inside of the dash assembly.  This cream connector should be reachable if you remove your stereo head unit and will be seen (you might want to use a torch and mirror), to thr right of the metal frame that the head unit slides into.

If you can get to this connector and unclip it and give yourself a bit of slack in the harness I would suggest that this would be a better way to break into the speaker harness should you want to bypass the Ford amplifier.

Thanks for info.
About to swap 2007RDS for 5000RDS.
Looks like not straight forward job.
