Title: ECU Circuit to Fans
Post by DJWerkz on Jul 9th, 2007, 3:24pm
This message relates to my thread in 'Problems' regarding overheating and fans not coming on slow speed.

As I have checked the fan relay and changed the ECT sensor for a new OEM part, I am now looking at a possible loom breakdown between the ECU and fans.

Has anyone got any photo's or good circuit diagram explanations on where the relevant wires run from and to?

Here is the site that contains all different wiring diagrams for the Scorp.

Quite a lot of info there so hope it helps, it says for Sierra but it is for Scorps... ???

Wires to the fan relay run in front of the radiator, clipped to the front crossmember behind the bumper.  The insulation had gone brittle and cracked on mine in this area, causing the fans to not work, damage to the ECU and some wierd faults with dash lights glowing dimly if the fan fuse was fitted - might be worth checking this area for loom damage...

I have a similar problem

If someone finds the solution, I would really love to know i have spent all afternoon trying to work out why my fans don't work  :-/.
DJ it would seem you are not alone  :)

Check for the presence of power and ground at the correct pins of the relay socket - however this alone isn't enough - you need to check that the circuit can pass the current needed by the fans, as well as the voltage.  I had a similar problem with my EGR valve solenoid which I disconnected and metered across the pins - it showed it had power but it still wouldn't work.  However, as soon as any load was connected to the circuit (i.e. the solenoid valve), the power dropped to almost zero because it couldn't supply the current needed.

Greetings!  At the moment I am still investigating this problem but for the time being have just disconnected the plug to the ECT so that both fans run continuously.

Car runs cool as a cucumber right now hehe.

I am going to take a look at the harness that runs across the front bumper, in particular a section that would have been near to the corner of my rad that leaked a while back.  Wondering if the leak contributed to a harness breakdown.

Right now, I just picked up a very cheap Saab 9000 for the Wife, just about to get that MOT'd then I can get back to the Scorpio.

Having had a look for something to unplug i found these bare wires could this be the problem.

Sorry i only have a cheapy camera, but the wires in the centre don't have any insulation they seem to be part of a small loom which has wires going into the sensors?? visible.

Update.

That is indeed my problem i unplugged the same thing as DJ and the fans came on so by process of illimination i think the wires above are my problem. I think sector 9 was indeed right in both of our problems are down to a loom issue.

I hope this proves useful to you.

Those could indeed be a cause but when you unplug the connector on the ECT the fans are supposed to come on full speed, so I think simply looking at those wires in your photo might not be the actually root cause of your problem,...in other words, there could be similar bare wires elsewhere in the loom, in particular, across the front of the car.
