Title: 2.3 replacing 24V ?
Post by Waglet on Jan 31st, 2008, 10:55am
G'day. I’m toying with the idea of getting myself a 2.3 Scorp. I’ve had many over the years, mostly 24 Valvers. However they (24V) are a bit pricey to run and maintain. So I thought I`d give a 2.3 a 'go' as I crave the Ultima comforts etc. My question is will I be dis-appointed with the performance etc. I'd be grateful for any feedback on this.

I dare say it might feel slower...

I miss my 2.3 Ultima it was plenty fast and just about the best car I ever owned.  The 2.3 is IMHO a real smooth and relatively economical performer. Nudging 30mpg on a run ;)

If you find a good one I'd say buy it.  I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Best wishes

Geoff

Hi there.IMO the 2.3 is a corker if you can find a good one,i.e. no wiring or inlet manifold issues. It would certainly be more economical around town than a v6 & quite responsive. If it,s acceleration your looking for try one with a manual gearbox. They are a totaly different beast altogether  ;)

It's a nice car but then I'm biased ::)

The 24v is nice but not the rocket I always believed it would be (sorry guys, I know you love your cosworths ;D), it is quicker than the 2.3 on full bore but not in a different league and not as silky smooth either.

With hindsight I'd have the 2.3 again, with manual box if poss.

Here's a nice one on e-bay, low miles and looks like it's been looked after....

That one on ebay sure does look nice, thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately I just know that a manual will drive (pardon the pun) me up the wall! I’ve gotta have an auto. I’ll keep searching.
Thanks for all the advice folks.

I've had my 2.3 auto Ultima estate since last April and would recommend it without any hesitation. I know the 24v is the ultimate in the Scorpio world but I wanted something giving the best balance of performance, economy and maintainence costs - the 2.3 fits the bill perfectly IMHO. Yes, I am slightly biased.

Take you time and look for a good one - it will be worth it. Took me 6 months to find mine !

Had what looked like a cracker lined up but due to work commitments I was unable to view in time and it was sold from under my nose! Still half the fun is looking..... ;D

Phew! I thought you meant replacing the 24V lump with a 16v one... Would have said tha stay the *BEEP* away!

I've done that and I'm bloody *BEEP* still doing it!  >:(

What a task! Well... It would be "easy" if you had a doner car standing next to you, but
if you only have the lump to begin with... oh boy...

The 16V is a nice lump, I can tell you that. Runs smoothly, has very good torque and
yes, it may be even quite economical. I've had mine about 5000km now and it's been
good, but so many problems have been on the way from 24v to 16v that they have
faded away all the joy from the new engine.

I drove a Cosworth on a test drive, all i wanted to do was thrash it. Not sure why. Then I drove a 2.3 and it felt powerful enough to me and so smooth, silky, relaxed and certainly seems to have enough torque to leave most poodlers behind you, with out thrashing it. I used to have an old 2.9 12v, that was a beaut. esp to embarass most boy racers and reps behind.
