Hi there guys!

I wonder if I can call on your collective experiences once again?!

I've noticed that the Scorp is vibrating through the steering wheel at about 30mph.

It doesn't happen until it's been driven for about 20 mins, but then it feels like it's going over rumble strips, the same is true when you speed up or slow down.

At slow speeds, she feels like someone is feathering the brakes, at 30mph, the juddering can be bone shaking, at 70mph, the effect is not as noticeable. :o

I have also noted that the NSF wheel is VERY hot with a burning smell once she's been driven.

The problem exists even if she's popped in Neutral, so I don't think there's a problem with the engine or transmission.

I'm thinking the culprit could be a seized caliper, but this would apply constant pressure and would just grind? Or a warped brake disc, getting worse as it gets hotter.

I've ran out of money at the mo, so I don't fancy getting this diagnosis wrong and spending too much cash.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated,

sounds like siezed caliper & warped disc.

Are the discs below the minimum thickness?

I ran one for a while once on very thin discs and they glowed red hot after some braking and warped, only noticeable when braking gently though at slower speeds. :-[

Definitely discs i'd say ;D

The discs feel OK to the casual touch, I'll whip the wheel off later and check it with the micrometer.

Hot wheel, usually seized caliper sliders leading to bent disc,rare for piston to stick.

Does it pull to the left ?

Sounds like brake binding, the caliper will need a strip down, probably need new front discs, and a brake fluid change ( not a good idea to boil brake fluid ! ).

All easy to do for the reasonably adept DIY-er, and not too expensive.

Got to investigate the brakes tomorrow, got the jack and stands back from my neighbour this afternoon. Mind you, he's rebuilding a 1972 Beetle, so it's a tug o' war between us! ;D

Pulls to the left (nearside) a little, but it all starts to judder after about 10 mins and is bad until the wheel and brake cool down.

broken caliper, had exactly the same with a pug 205, ok different car but symptoms exactly the same. i stripped and cleaned caliper....still didnt work, replaced it with one from a breakers.....

Striped down the caliper, the piston was a bit stiff, though at push back in might have cured it, but it still binds, although not as much.

I managed to take the brakes apart without taking apart the silly nuts that need a 7mm allen key, I'm not sure if the caliper design makes sense or not. Actually it seems too complicated for a caliper.

But the bottom line is a new caliper! Oh joy!

It will be my first ever brake bleed!

Bleeding the front brakes is easy as you only have to bleed the one you've replaced, as both front brakes are on a separate circuit.

A brake hose clamp is useful , along with a one-man bleed kit.
