Title: HBC wiring Post by Brad on Apr 25th, 2009, 7:42pm Hi All. Would anyone have an idea why, on my Scorpio, M reg, 2.0L DOHC, there is a small 3" wiring loom with plugs either end that is connected to the top of the HBC ? On mine, there is only one wire on that loom (Br/Bu), whereas it looks like it should have 2 (Br/Bu + Wh/Bu) and seems as though it is some kind of 'extension' to the main loom. I have the early HBC and suspecting it to be faulty (stopping on all the time, and I have done the test on this site) I am having a later version of the HBC delivered next week. Question is, when I fit the 'newer' HBC, can I get rid of the small 3" long wiring extension and just plug the main wiring loom straight to the top of the HBC? The colours on the main wiring loom match exactly, the two wires on the short extension (Br/Bu + Wh/Bu). I've checked the wiring schematic and it only shows the 'later' version with 2 wires connected. I understand that all the earlier HBC's only had one wire connected to the top of the HBC !! Any idea's?? Cheers Brad |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Simmo on Apr 25th, 2009, 9:04pm Brad, Are you confusing air con....see Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acthermalfuse.htm) with climate control?. The CC cars have a large HBC which is totally different from the 'Thermal Fuse' fitted to Air con models. HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/hbctest.htm) |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Brad on Apr 25th, 2009, 10:17pm No, the car has CC and A/C. There are 3 connections to the HBC, one either side and one on top. The top one has a short 3" long wire (Br/Bu) with a plug on each end, one end to the HBC and the other goes to the wiring loom. The short bit looks like it should have 2 wires on it (as per wiring diagram). I understood that the later Scorpios had a larger HBC because of overheating problems. So, I need to know is on later Scorpio's, is there the same single wire connected to the HBC? or is there a couple (Wh/Bu + Br/Bu)?? The wiring schematic shows 2 wires connected to the top of the HBC, why does the early Scorpio's only have one? Puzzled !! Regards Brad |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Simmo on Apr 26th, 2009, 8:12am I know it was late.....well it was for an 'old boy' ;).....but I'm totally confused now! ::). You can't have AC and CC. It's one or the other. |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by gozz on Apr 26th, 2009, 11:47am Brad. If your car has three plugs on the HBC,one at each end and one on top it is climate control. The drivers side plug has black and orange and grey and orange, the other side has black and purple and black, the top one has a thin blue and grey wire,I have eight vehicles with CC and they are all alike.I think the newer HBC had a heavier heat sink,it would not seem logical to alter the wiring. Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Brad on Apr 26th, 2009, 3:14pm Hi This has got ME confused now !! Right, I have one of these on the dash : http://www.fordscorpio.info/ccreset.htm which I'm sure is the CC, BUT it has a button on that says "A/C" which I assumed was Air con. With the CC on (which is on all the time) temp gets coolish, but when the A/C is on, it can get really cool ! The CC works very well in maintaining required temp. The wire on top of the HBC is Brown/Blue and is a single wire. In the wiring schematics, there is two wires going to the HBC (control 1 &2, coloured White/Blue + Brown/Blue). So I'm still puzzled as to why I only have one wire that connects to the top of the HBC. Brad |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Simmo on Apr 26th, 2009, 4:00pm Brad. You have Climate Control. The single brown/blue wire to the HBC is standard and that is exactly what I have on my 2.0ltr 16v. There is a 'spare' hole on the connector but that seems to be the norm. Hope that helps, Mike. :) |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Tompion on Apr 26th, 2009, 4:09pm Well the answer is probably yes & no ;D Mine has 2 wires, but I've just been out to the car and linked it with just one wire to the brown/blue & it seemed to work as it should. Dave |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Brad on Apr 28th, 2009, 5:12pm SORTED !!!! I popped the replacement HBC in and connected up. I left the 'short 3" wiring' off and just connected the 2 wires (brown/blue + white/blue) to the top of the HBC. Now all is well and I'm now able to turn the heater off as it should, also on manual I can now control the speed of the heater fan for the first time. Many thanks to all who replied to this thread. Title: Re: HBC wiring, continued. Post by Brad on May 1st, 2009, 12:29pm Hi again. PROBLEM !!! Now I'm peeved! After installing the new(er) HBC, the heater was perfectly okay for 2 days but now it's cutting in and out. I take it that once you switch the heater blower on, it should stay on? I read on this website ( http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/hbctest.htm) that the cutting in and out is likely to be the HBC over-heating. This is probably what happened to the original HBC before it failed altogether with the result that the heater stayed on all the time. The website also mentioned that ... " It may be possible to add additional heatsink or replace it with a later part. " Has anyone had any experience of either method which actually cured the problem?? PLEASE HELP !!!! Brad. |

Title: Re: HBC wiring Post by Simmo on May 1st, 2009, 1:47pm Brad. If the CC is set to auto then the blower speed will continually fluctuate as the need increases or diminishes in response to the demands of the various sensors. Reading the CC page to understand the method of operation may help. |
