Title: Steering Rack Play
Post by Mottsy on May 7th, 2009, 6:47pm
Good News, My old girl passed the MOT yesterday. ;D

Only advisory was "Slight play in steering rack".

Can this be tightened up or shall I just live with it?

hi there

normally you would replace the rack, but i'd just leave until if fails a MOT.

Play is usually down to wear in the rack & pinion gear, usually more noticable in the straight ahead position, so isn't adjustable. But as it's just passed the MOT, then it can't be that bad  ;)

Does the steering feel loose generally on all road surfaces, especially in the straight ahead position ?...if not, then as Scorpio_man says, leave it till the next MOT....unless you do an above average yearly mileage  ;)

If you'd like to check the play yourself.....then with the engine running & the wheels in the straight ahead position, gently rock the steering wheel side to side to see at what point the wheels react to the movement. From memory (I think), there should be no more that 13 mm freeplay either way in the steering wheel before the wheels react  :)
