Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by Highlander on Jul 22nd, 2009, 3:14pm Hi Mark, Second hand engine every time, you're taking a chance on it but its only a few hundred quid and you get to keep your car ;) The parts to repair it would cost more than your cars worth but it has been done by members of the forum If its just a straight engine swap its not too bad labour wise p.s. you'll get a cheaper engine than that if you look around ;) DONT scrap it!! i'll buy it off you before that happens!! |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by beefcake66 on Jul 23rd, 2009, 12:46am I feel a bit better knowing that, thanks for that lads. I'm going to be looking for a engine now. And should I stick with the 24v or will the 12v be ok if i cant get a 24v. Is it a big job swapping the engines and is there anything i should now about before buyin a engine. Once again thanks kind regards Mark |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by gozz on Jul 23rd, 2009, 10:07am beefcake66. The 24v has EEC 5 power control module and distributorless ignition, the 12v has EEC 4 and a distributor.Changing them over would constitute a major complexity, indeed hardly worth the effort.I would stick with the 24v. Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by Highlander on Jul 23rd, 2009, 10:16am Mark did yours have any sign of a chain rattle when you started it? Personally i'd like to buy one that was still fitted in a car so you could test it, make sure it doesnt rattle when you start it up and give it a good run, and check for leaks, oil etc other than that cross your fingers You're best/cheapest option may be to buy a whole car |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by beefcake66 on Jul 23rd, 2009, 3:24pm Yes had a 1 second rattle when started cold, since it going on me seems a common fault, but also read that the cat can make a rattling noise too. Mine just lost power on motorway oil light cam on and knocking/rattling and would not rev past 1200rpm.... Not started it up at since we got towed back from Warwick M40 on a recovery lorry back to north wales. Im going to try and buy a complete car and go from there. Many thanks for all of your help and any other advise is always needed, and is there a special place to buy the tools to remove the engine??? Kind regards Mark |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by Highlander on Jul 23rd, 2009, 3:54pm Hi Mark, should be pretty much standard tools to remove it, sockets, spanners torx bits, cant think of anything fancy, in fact I dont have anything fancy so that must be enough :) Chain rattle means the guides have gone, your chain must have jumped a cog or just snapped but make sure thats whats actually happened and its not something simpler ;) I'm in North Wales fairly regularly, if you need anything for it gimme a shout. Your 4 cams out your broken engine should fetch £100 on ebay, the Granada Cosworth engine (BOA) gets a good power increase from fitting the Scorpio (BOB) cams so they are sought after ;) keep your waterpump (discontinued) thermostat (£100 new), hoses, engine loom etc plus all the sensors etc you can take off it. |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by Highlander on Jul 23rd, 2009, 4:34pm Dont think so, Dave Howard did start a thread once counting them but its disappeared in the mists of time :) It happens but its not "common" You off to look for a spare engine Tony? :) |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by beefcake66 on Jul 23rd, 2009, 7:04pm Highlander thanks for that, I’m going to get a third opinion on what is wrong with the engine, just in case it is something silly but I don’t think so. I’m still going to buy another 24v Cosworth, whether I use it for spares for mine or verse versa, because I love the cars so much. Is there much difference to the facelift model or will most of my Scorpio parts fit on it just I in case I buy a better condition car than mine. And if you’re ever near Kinmel Bay North Wales let me know like to meet up with you. Kind regards Mark ps thanks to everyone else for there input too... ;D |

yep they are fairly interchangeable, lights, seats etc, rear centre seatbelt is a bit more difficult on the saloon as it needs welding but it can be done ;) |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Snapped On My Cosworth 24v... Post by pinto on Jul 31st, 2009, 8:46pm From the symptoms you describe, it doesnt sound like a chain break to me - if it was, the engine would have died and refused to restart (whereas yours will run and rev to 1200rpm) Oil light / knocking sounds like you've had an oil pump failure - the revving could be the ECU putting her into LOS to prevent further damage. |
