Title: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 2nd, 2009, 11:15pm Hi, I changed my auto petrol car for a manual diesel one and wondered: It doesn't have a fuel computer is this normal? How do i change the front speakers as they rattle! How do i replace the back lights for the heater controls and the temp display? The rear windscreen wiper/washer isn't working any suggestions? My passenger side mirror isn't moving any suggestions? It's very noisy and it's an early car, any suggestions as to noise reduction? Any sensible way to increase power? Cheers Jon |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by Tekno on Oct 2nd, 2009, 11:18pm Stock speakers are 4,75" but any 5,25" and depth under 60mm coaxials (if you do not want to fit tweeters) go in place of stock front speakers. |

My mirror doesn't move at all any ideas? Where's the fuesbox for the tailgate? How do you turn up the turbo?? How much is advisable? Do these TD's have EGR? Mine has a similar symptom to my Missus's 306 DTurbo where on full throttle the car seems to have less power than at higher throttle positions. If so could it easily be disconnected? Cheers For your help, Jon |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 4th, 2009, 2:42am Took my car to Plymouth and back today from London. It's definitely a little quieter now and runs better, however: At the services the car wouldn't start! I got a jump start and continued. Dropped off my gear and went to Halfords/Quick fit for a battery. Got a new one and the car still has starting problems- ie it doesn't unless you jump start it! The guy at Kwick Fit said sorry old battery (I know i know, i wouldn't normally go there but 4pm on a Sat pm i was disparate) and said take it to another Kwick Fit or a newer replacement under guarantee. I'm worried that there is something more sinister than just the battery- should I be? My car has self leveling suspension that doesn't - actually its all a bit more crashy than the last one. Any ideas? The lining in the bonnet is sitting on the top of the rad cap near the bulkhead and smells bad! What do i use to keep it up? The bonnet bounces in the wind alarmingly. The plastic surround at the base of the windscreen also does this and is missing it's fixings- can i get these? Cheers Jon |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 4th, 2009, 3:36am Sadly the new battery wouldn't give enough to turn the engine over. Once started the car drove "normally" hence my concern that it might be something more serious than a crap kwick fit battery! Cheers Jon |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by Matt on Oct 4th, 2009, 10:00am does the car have a battery cover? sounds like a damp fuse box, battery one is more of a problem then the drivers side one, the cars fuses boxes are located in the engine bay, one each side near the bulkhead re the mirror, check the wiring plug on the switch, press the mirror glass by hand in all 4 conrers, may have seized re the flapping bonnet, thats not normal, they should sit down solid, check the pins on the hinges and that the bonnet catch is locking fully. for the sound deadening, take it off or get a second hand one, if its startet to come apart you wont be able to stick it back up as it will just tear self leveling shocks, these are gonna sting, new ones are £300 each!! where are you located mate? a member in you area may be able to do a scan on it |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by Simmo on Oct 4th, 2009, 10:53am The bonnet 'quilt' is only held in by large headed plastic inserts. Should be easy to source. The windscreen grill is just held by self tappers near the wipers (4) and sometimes it is riveted at either end to the inner wing. Again self tappers will do the job. |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 4th, 2009, 11:00am Hi, I'm in SE London but would be willing to travel! I've a battery cover on the way and once in i guess this will start to dry things out?! Having read the posts last night it also looks like i need the front injector/fuel sensor to help with my turbo problems although not really sure about cost/ease of fitting. Have adjusted the bonnet bump stops and all seems more stable, the sound deadening is not too bad but is missing some of the studs hat fasten it to the bonnet. Cheers Jon |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by mijfife on Oct 4th, 2009, 4:53pm Hi Jon, while the TD doesn't have a fuel computer it does have some extra hidden info on the trip computer. If you press & hold the trip reset button for a few seconds until you here a bleep, it takes you into a different bit. by continously pressing the button, it then scrolls through various bits of info, the only two I've ever found useful are litres of fuel left in the tank and the battery level. The battery level should help you work out if the car is charging or not, ideally you are looking for around 13.8 volts with the engine running. Cheers Jim |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 8th, 2009, 11:15pm Normally i'd agree with you but i've got shorts accross the fuses even when things are disconnected such as the rad fans etc Will change the box and then check alternator as well. |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 10th, 2009, 11:42am Ok, so changed the Fues box with one from Familyguy (thanks mate!!) Already things are better, no shorting and car turns over more easily etc but the glow plug light is not coming on so the car won't start. The fuse box i was given was from a 2.9 so obviously i did add the glow plug fuse. However is the box different? I left some of the relays on there that were already there as they were the same colour was this wrong? please help!!! |

Title: Re: TD Estate Owner asks..... Post by jon_viola on Oct 19th, 2009, 12:15pm All sorted, needed the box rewiring and new alternator. However battery light is still on at startup and voltage low, it goes out as soon as you rev the engine though and stays off. Is this normal? Or is the idle speed to low at start up? |
