Title: Engine / autobox wire loom
Post by paul_l on Oct 5th, 2010, 10:55pm
Hi , After owning my 1995 ultima 24v scorpio for 4 years and for the last year having mega autobox problems which resulted in the car spending more time of the road than on i have taken the bull by the horns and striped it down to find as suspected a very crispy /cracked & cumblely wire loom, I have been looking on ebay  but no luck ! Could anyone suggest were i might be able to find one ?? I would even concider buying a new one because the car has only 69000 miles on the clock and scrapping is not an option.  ???

how bad is bad? the odd section of missing insulation is very common, if its like the loom i removed from a car in a scrap yard a few years ago when had no insulation of any kind across the entire length of the v section

it may just be worth getting some heat shrink and patching it up

I'd go for the repair option, either your own or find a second hand one if you can.

If you could actually find a new one for sale I dont think you would consider it an option for long, they are VERY expensive!

Hi large lumps of the tape insulation are missing but what concerns me more is that i can see cracks in the wires running through the v section ! Will try patching as you suggest but will still try for second hand one before i dive into it ( Hell of a lot of wires in there ) !!. After i sent origanal post i found an old post on the forum with similar problem and the price of a new loom quoted ( WOW ) see what u mean !!, Same old cenario "theres one somewhere it just finding it " !! :'(

Can't see a simple way round it, just means meticulously soldering in replacement wires

Hi ,Had a bit of a result this am managed to speak to a man called Dave at bygonebathrooms understand he is well known by a few forum members, very helpfull chap ! He has a second hand loom that he is gonna mail me, so when it arrives i plan to lay it all out on the kitchen table ( while the missis is watching telly ) and repair as nessecary ! He said it has been clean cut at the autobx end of the v , Would it have to be soldered and shinkwrapped there or is there some good other way that i could reconnent them ie good quality connectors ? My drift of thinking is that way i could cut my old loom and connect the repaired at that point and not have to drop the auto box ??

I'd probably try that, and solder and heatshrink. Hope wires are same colours!
