Title: spraying a bumper Post by Pianoman on Jul 9th, 2012, 4:24pm I need to spray and fit a front and rear bumper, both are different colours then the current damaged bumpers (tourmallard). Can anyone offer any advice on preparing them for painting and if I need any sort of undercoat etc. Thanks Tony |

Title: Re: spraying a bumper Post by PJDavis on Jul 9th, 2012, 5:35pm One bit of advice is to get someone to help you hold the bumpers in place when re-fitting, they split very easily. As for painting, I've painted two bumpers, my advise is to flatten the paint on the whole of the bumper with 600-800 grit Wet & Dry. Make sure the bumper is completely flattened and dull. Then in many passes and in thin coats carefully spray on the new paint, but if it goes on too thick it will split and crack more easily in the future. Wet-On-Wet is best, so the previous coat should be dry to touch, but still curing. |

Title: Re: spraying a bumper Post by Mike H on Jul 10th, 2012, 1:13pm Halfords list the Ford colours, did see tourmallard listed recently ~ yep: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_175042_langId_-1_categoryId_165505 You'll need a lacquer on top as well, otherwise as said already. :) |

I used Hycote brand paint on a Scorpio rear bumper - check for it on ebay, lot cheaper than Halfords - I used about 4 cans of colour and 2 of clear lacquer, cost about £15 for the lot . For keying the surface of the old paint I used a Scotchbrite pad. |

Title: Re: spraying a bumper Post by Dave2302 on Jul 15th, 2012, 1:23pm Hycote is excellent, gives good coverage and not prone to running or sagging, used loads during the Puma build on various brackets, inside the car etc etc Try and do it in a heated shed / garage, hotter the better, and shake the cans as if they were a gorilla on yer muvva ;) HTH Dave |
