Title: bumper what plastic?
Post by Torbayboy on Sep 28th, 2018, 12:03pm
Trying to repair a split in a bumper Parcelfarce damaged, found some products on ebay but need to know if they are made from P E plastic as this makes a difference to what i can use to repair it with.

Anyone had dealings in this as to what composition the plastic is on these.

Thanks

I think Brittle is the technical term  ;)

I had to repair a crack in the front bumper, and as you cant get to the back of it even with bumper off as its a moulded box section, I chose to stitch it!

As its a bit difficult to post pictures, if you imagine this is the crack

    ----------------------------------

What I did was to take a 5mm drill,  drill a hole at the very ends of the crack to stop it flexing and cracking further, and then drilled intermediate holes along the crack, and then filled all the holes with Araldite to stitch the sides together.

     o---o---o---o---o---o---o---o

Then sanded the Araldite down, then took the crack line and with a pointed dremel turned the crack into a slight V and then applied a thin film of filler to the crack and sanded back, and then primed and sprayed using a blender spray solvent when applying the clear lacquer finish to blend out into the bumper rather than respray the whole bumper. Worked rather well on the Silver Metalic, and so far seems to have held it.

Think the bumpers are ABS.
If the crack is in an area where you cannot get behind it, expanding foam from a can may help to restore some strength to the damaged area.

Cor! great (or is it grate!) lots of advice, the bumper is on the deck as a spare (having driven into my stone gatepost last year I'm taking no chances now :-[

Will get round to it now I know what I need, and hopefully when some nice people on here want my 2 surplus cars, I will have room to play with my bumper(s)

Scorpio Mike is right about expanding foam. If you are working from the inside another technique is to use fine aluminium mesh, Halfords sell it, to reinforce the area. Cut to size, place in position, heat the handle end of  teaspoon or similar with a blow lamp, and apply to the mesh. It will melt the plastic into the mesh and hold firm. Trial and error gets the right temperature to obtain a smooth spread. It is also great to bridge shapes before applying glass fibre matting and filler. Ali. mesh holds the shape while the glass fibre provides the strength. :)
