Title: Alternator types
Post by Technology2005 on Feb 22nd, 2019, 10:36am
I had the joy of breaking down last night after the alternator packed in. :(

Looking to source a replacement and was wondering about the different types of alternator fitted to our Scorpios

I have a Motorcraft EGL 1277R fitted which is a 90A with a 60mm pulley.

Given the eyewatering prices of some of the alternators I have found, is it possible to fit an alternative 90A alternator as there seems to be more than one type fitted to Scorpio Mk2?

Are the connections likely to all be the same and would the existing drive belt type fit if an 80mm pulley was on any alternative (after adjustment of tension of course!)

What prices are you getting for a replacement ?
I have a funny feeling I have a brand new one kicking around...

Hi Mike, for the exact part number prices from £160 all the way up to £500+ which is crazy and yet for alternative models £70+

Surely there can't be much difference other than the maximum current output?

Found one on Ebay for a Ford transit that is supposedly compatible for  £78

Output is 120A which I assume is fine.

Just had a look in the shed - found it !
Lucas brand - 70Amp - LRA518
Original box, must have had it 10 years or so.

You did well to find it so quickly ;)

Pity its a 70amp and not a 90amp.

I'll get that Transit one off Ebay as I've cross referenced the part code and it does come back as a match for the one I have fitted.

Thanks for looking anyway, somebody will no doubt be after one and see this thread :)
