I have a new cat for one side and was thinking of getting one for the other side as a backup. The ones I have been looking at are not type approved, they have less metals in them, will they still do the job.

Hi Gerald

Your car only has to have type approved CATS if it's manufactured after 2001. That said, if the CAT you have already is a Ford one, or an expensive type-approved, it's probably best to match it. Non type approved CATS will still do a good job, and the Ford engines are pretty clean running anyway, be aware that the cheaper the CAT the shorter life it will have generally speaking. As another quick fact, I wonder whether any CAT for a Scorpio is type approved apart from perhaps the Ford item.

Its for the scorpio, so 98 reg and can get away with non approved. As I have one, the new one would match it, its not approve as far as I can tell either. What I am thinking is if the exhaust needs changing at any time I would go for a stainless one and the cats might get damaged in its removal and after the last mot, it just made it through as far as I can tell, I was thinking ahead.
Its just short of the 100,000 miles, just run in ;D

A good fabricator / fitter will not damage the CATS when fitting your Stainless Steel System, even if he/she did, repairing by welding should be no problem. You would need to choose whether or not you wanted a 'twin' system going down to exit both sides, or a standard system. I'd go for a standard system but increase the bore all-round by quarter of an inch, thats what I did with mine. You certainly wouldn't want it to become much louder, although mine was a touch deeper all the rev range.
All my cars have Stainless Steel systems, I have a local friend that has a business making systems for all cars. Expect to pay around £1000 for a good standard system.
