Title: Mystery connectors........ Post by carltailfin on Jun 29th, 2025, 12:02pm Hi All! I'm a new member to the forum with 5 Scorpios and hope someone out there can help. I have been engaged in a 6-month long re-wiring oydssey of one of my Scorpios - A 1994 Ultima saloon 2.0 16v. auto in Ash black. All wires in the engine bay have been replaced one at a time.....and a sizeable amount of wires under the dashboard too - running in to the auxiliary fuse box, in to the connectors in the A-Pillars and a few running across the bulkhead etc. The time has come to put the dashboard back in but I find there are 2 connectors that don't seem to have anything to plug into. It's been so long since I started the project that I cant remember if these are simply superflous to requirements have nothing to plug in to such as for an option my car does not have- or if I missing something and they do plug into something else..... They both look like the sort of connectors you would expect a relay to plug in to. One connector is blue in colour and is located on the left hand bulkhead hanging down next to the air duct pipe above where the glove compartment is. It has 5 terminals and 5 wires - heavy violet/yellow - black - yellow/red - violet and - orange. The other connector is green in colour and is located on the right hand side of bulkhead approximately below the air ducting and hanging down above the metal tray where many connectors are fastened. It has 5 terminals and 6 wires: violet/blue - violet/yellow - black, violet/blue - violet/orange - white/red. Any ideas folks? Carl |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by Tompion on Jul 1st, 2025, 3:26am Hi and welcome, Unfortunately, not many left on the site now so may take a while for replies - if at all. A fair chance the socket above the glove box is redundant, if it is for a relay, it should be clipped to bracket above an access in the glovebox. There were 3 sockets there on my ’97 2.3 Ultima but none of them used. A list of relays outside the fuse boxes is in the handbook and can be seen here: https://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook.htm on pages 134-135. I don't know what the other socket is. Dave |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by carltailfin on Jul 2nd, 2025, 3:17pm Thanks Dave - much appreciated! The relays outside the fusebox all seem to have the metal attachment clip on the relay body - not on the connector - so deepens the mystery - if these are redundant how are they attached to the car - there are no obvious signs of any attachment method - or witness marks - making me wonder if these are meant to just dangle free from the loom - which does seem a little unlikely - the plot thickens! I will have a look in the access panel in the glovebox in one of my other Scorpios to see if there are any clues - drivers side one will remain a mystery though! I do have the 4 inch Ford Scorpio Wiring Book from Ford - it's just not that helpful on this occasion......I wondered if the listed Headlamp washer relay would be th epassenger connector - but according to the book the connector is the wrong design and the wires the wrong colours......with noo other suggestions given for other relays in these areas........Character building indeed! Stop Press - Just found 3 more wires falling to bits! They go from the stalk control module to the radio via shielded cable! Having to improvise microphone shielded cable for the job after 3 hours on the internet trying to find the correct auto-cable equivalents - all roads led to Shenzhen China!............ |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by carltailfin on Jul 4th, 2025, 2:34pm Hi all, Well, after 6 months of re-wiring I have finally connected up the battery for the first time.......... Thanks to Dave for reminding me you can look above the glove box to check for redundant connectors - and sure enough according to another Scorpio I checked on the blue connector I was mystified about is indeed not used. I would say it is probably for a headlamp washer pump - although my 5" thick Ford workshop wiring bible for the Scorpio seems to claim otherwise with different wire colours and connector design.... The green connector on the driver's side remains unresolved though.......Anyway, the initial fault that ended up leading me down this worm hole of a complete rewire appears fixed - the speedo now works! Yippee! Unfortunately I have a new fault - Mode computer does nothing - and a possible hang-over fault from last time which was an intermittent ABS light - but which now appears to now be.......well, permanent.......the plot thickens..... Thinking of calling on the men with white jackets soon!.............I'll keep you all enthralled with this fascinating saga folks - in the meantime any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Cheers! Carl |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by carltailfin on Jul 4th, 2025, 6:56pm Trip computer now works folks - Somebody might have plugged the trip computer in to the background illumination for the headlight switch connector........and vice versa........I couldn't possibly comment......... ABS light still on though and - new fault - doesn't now turn over on the key 7 times out of 10 - might need to look at the inhibitor switch and relay........What joy! Cheers Carl |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by Torbayboy on Jul 4th, 2025, 7:59pm "doesn't now turn over on the key 7 times out of 10" Have this on my 95 12v estate, was advised by local spanner that it could be down to wear in the round switching assembly on the back of the ignition barrel, 3 wires coming out of it it's a small circular moulding about 1 1/2 inches accross, mine has more or less fixed itself with use nowadays though, being on a 12v I thought it was same old granada problem with the small feed wire on the starter motor BUT it's not a granny is it?? As for dash lights, run with it for a few weeks dashes have self sorting mode generally, some are particularly lights are prone to wanting to "show off" but they must be out for mot ;) ;) |

Title: Re: Mystery connectors........ Post by Tompion on Jul 12th, 2025, 9:16pm When mine sometimes wouldn’t turn over it was the starter solenoid - changing the starter motor cured it. You could try giving the starter motor a clout next time. Have you checked for ABS codes? |
