Title: Unlock car over the phone
Post by johndyork on Sep 10th, 2006, 9:43pm
Unlocking Trivia:  Received a recent email suggesting that in event of locking keys in the car a 'second' remote could be used over the phone (if you were lucky enough to have 2 working remotes for a Scorp!). Ring a person at home say who could hold the remote to the phone & press unlock, and you 'hold phone about a foot from the door'.

Tried this with no luck - anyone know where on the car the sensor for the remote lives - I might try holding it nearer to this.
Regards, johndyork.

There was something about this on top gear recently.
I think it has something to do with how the remote sends the signal.
If it is an sound based signal it should work but if it is infra red it wont.
But then again this is just my understanding of it I could be talking pure sheite
Please feal free to tell me so if you know any better ;D

A possibility if it is RF based but it would depend on the frequency, Infra Red signals can't travel through speakers :)

Interesting stuff ;)

A regular passenger of mine can open his big iron electric gates using his mobile from anywhere in the world.
Why he would want to do this beggars belief......but he does like his technology :)

Yehhhh...... I also remember top Gear testing a method of boosting the range of your remote by up to double. This was done by holding the remote pressed into the side of your head!!! ::) Works though! ;D

Some American cars are  fitted with  a device that enables you to start the engine  with the remote  ( car  is  still  locked at this point ).

Ideal  for  de-frosting  on  winter  mornings   or   cooling  the car  on  summer  days

Which reminds me, I need to get a Defa Warmup system for the winter  ;D

Set the timer and the car is warm, defrosted and the engine pre-heated when you're about to leave for work/school/etc  :)

What sort of temperatures do you get Kjetil - is it below zero (C) Dec to Mar?
Hey cossie_al - tell me you didn't try it! ;)  My buddy who sent me the email assures me it works on his Volvo - don't know how scientifically he tested it - may have been in remote range anyway!!  Must test on my wife's Focus!  (Neither of us are blonds!)

Found the 'original' article - some other interesting facts about mobile phones & security!

No mate I didnt
I only got the one remote so if I lose that theres not much point in ringing home and getting the missus to point a remote down the phone. ;)

A friend of mine has a remote start on his Mondeo, push a button on the remote, car starts and headlamps come on as if by magic. Not sure what use it is here in the UK but bloody funny to see people's faces when you're in the petrol station :)

Thinking on the line of advice, somoene told me once a good way to test a battery, lick the terminals; I tried it once on a PP3 (9v), I won't be doing that again :o. I wouldn't advise anyone to try it on their suspected 'dud' Scorpio battery either ;)

Regards, Bruce.

Well, in my defence I was a kid at the time, about 9. Had one of those remote control cars, it took a pair of PP3's, used to run down in no time. Hence with about a dozen half-spent batts I decided to pick the best two, apparently one wasn't as dead as it seemed...

The remote control car I have now is a bit larger and hence takes larger batteries, I may use that tip for the misfire though  ::)

Regards, Bruce.

When I played guitar in a band many moons ago, I used to have a few effect pedals that used 9 volt batteries.
The only way to test if a battery was good was to stick your tongue on it & see what kind of feeling you got..... A good battery would hurt, a half drained battery would have a tingle, & a dead one....chuck it in the bin.... ::)

....Ahhhh....those were the days ;D

Or you can hide in the cupboard and start popping fuses ;D.

Oh hell, I think the TV's busted, what a shame :D

Disclaimer: Of course I wouldn't recommend anyone try to trace that elusive faulty circuit breaker with their tongue either ;)
