Title: Value for Money Post by petehull on Jul 20th, 2007, 9:12am Taken from the magazine 'U' letters page. By Jim Cooper Ashford Kent Many years ago, my father worked at a sugar refinery in London. A huge cylinder had just been installed to store syrup, but before it could be used, it was dented by a wayward forklift truck. A consultant from the installers was called; he looked at the cylinder, took some mesurements and made some calculations, and then he asked for a large block of wood, a 7lb hammer and two strong men. He made a chalk mark on the cylinder and asked one man to hold the block of wood over the mark while the other gave it a couple of hefty blows. Out popped the dent and later, a bill for £100 arrived. The consultant was asked to justify 30 minutes work with the bill. An itemised account was received which read: 'For hitting cylinder - £2.' 'For knowing where to hit cylinder - £98. I thought this was a brilliant bit of accounting..... enjoy Pete |
