Guys. Unlike my food which I like fresh, I prefer my music ready made, either on these little 5" shiny silver discs or these big black wonky ones which spin around and get scratched by a glorified diamond-enctrusted nail on a chrome scaffold pole.

However, I do a great impression of the didgeridoo on an old radiator bottom hose ;)

Title: Re: My other interest in life
Post by jonnycab on Dec 15th, 2007, 4:17am
If anyone is interested....music used to be my life & not just my interest in life  :)

Ever since I got my first guitar at 14, I wanted to work in the music industry. So when I left school at 16 I did a YTS sound engineering course & became a sound engineer in a small Essex recording studio....& was studio manager by the time I was 19  8)

But all I really wanted to do was play guitar for a living  ;)...that's what I told my careers master at school & he looked at me blankly & gave me a Marconi application form  ???

The local band I was in was okay but was never gonna go anywhere  :)......

...Eventually I got a decent band going & did some gigs, recorded some demos, did more gigs, got a management deal, went on tour, did more demos, got a couple of full UK tours supporting signed bands, got good write ups in Kerrang/Sounds etc, got record label interest, became resident support band at the Marquee (when it was in Charing Cross Rd), went on tour again & finally got a deal with a small record label in 1989.

Spent 4 weeks in a residential recording studio in Eastbourne in early 1990 with a producer who had previously produced Thin Lizzy & Marillion (to name but a few) & then....the day we finished mixing the album....the record company turned 'round & said...."sorry everyone, we can't afford to pay for all this recording/production etc 'cos we're now in the hands of the receiver"  :o......off walks the producer, the studio keeps the tapes & threatens to destroy them unless they get paid....EMI are interested but want the album remixed, but are not prepared to pay for the original recording studio costs (skinflints)  >:( ....so small record company goes into receivership & band is classed as an asset of the company, so cannot be signed by any other record company unless they want to pay off all studio & producer costs.....no interest anymore & master tapes of 4 weeks recording are duely rubbed by studio  ???.... :'(

The band carried on for a couple more years, even released a self financed 12", 4 track EP. But for some reason it never happened again, probably 'cos people & press thought we were has-beens & just lost interest... if only they knew the truth  ::)

I eventually, after playing in a few other bands became so disillutioned with music & the whole industry that I didn't want anything more to do with it & realised that it was just a totally contrived & corrupt industry that strives to manipulate & dupe not just the artist, but the audience too.....& it's full of drugs  >:(

So next time someone asks me why I became a cab driver, I'll say "Is this gonna be a long journey then ?"  ;)

P.S....Another reason I gave up music is because I never made a penny out of it...it actually cost me money  ???

The only time I ever made any money out of music was when a guy I used to work with at the recording studio phoned me up one day & asked if I was interested in doing some session work.
I Did two tracks in one afternoon with him & got royalty cheques for 6 years for the stuff being used on TV all over the world  8)

Pete mate, this is your fault I've poured my musical heart out  ;)...........for starting a post about musical interests in life  ;D

Indeed Johnnycab, the music industry is a fickle business.

While  people like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and James Blunt are  ( undeserved  IMO )   millionaires  on the strength  of  just  one or  two  albums,  hard  working  artists and bands  that have trod the boards for yonks  can't get a look in  because   these  X Factor   sressot   get all the record deals. >:(

:(

JC,
What do you mean by making my wife cry? She's sobbing her heart out here and there's no consoling her after she read your musical experiences, I'm only just managing to hold back the tears...... :-[ :'(

No, really, it is a very interesting background you have there, and as I read it I was thinking about how the cut throat industry works, it brings to mind all the stories of people who have come on hard times persuing a career in music.  Many Have are succeeding and many are still striving to get in on the way of life, I think of all those who perform to the Simon cowels of this world (a typical example of someone getting "Rich" at others expense) I also think of those who have got into the drugs scene etc only to ruin (or lose) their life.
Sad isn't it..

My musical ability stems from when my dad gave me a mouth organ at about 7 years old, I sat on the stairs for hours and taugh myself to play "God save the gratious queen" I think this was probably the seed....
I spent many a night in the pub playing the gobiron and getting everybody singing roll out the barrel etc (cost me an arm and a leg).  After that I didn't bother anymore until back in the seventies when I got an old harmonium and started to pump the bellows on that for a while, I had a mate who came down one day, he turned out to have a Yamaha organ and so he more or less helped me with a few chords etc and got me very interested in keyboards.
I bought a Hammond 123j2 which I managed to make satifactory progress on.... THEN, the Technics G7 was introduced to me, I went to see it at the local music store where I fell deeply in love with it, but alas, :-[ I couldn't afford it at 5 grand..... Soon after that I did buy the Technics E55 at 3 grand (on the knock) took me ages to pay it off.  This instrument really did bring me along, had it for years before trading it in for a Rolan E20 which I still have along with 4 various other keyboards, a Korg 05/RW synth module etc etc

I used to go to all the demo's and organ shows, I even used to play at a local nightclub (full of blue rinses) on a Thursday night (for beer) I must've been mad cos I used to load up the Technics (after folding it down) in my Wartburg Estate and take it all the way to the club, set it up and play it for a couple of hours, couldn't have much beer as I had to drive it home again afterwards.. (the things we do''')

Oh well, that's about the size of my commecial music career, I only play for my own enjoyment, I find that it is by far the BEST way to unwind and forget about All the things that I find to moan about.... keeps the Victor Meldrew aproach at bay so to say.

Anyway, back to you.... I did find your story very interesting, was your band well known then, I would like to hear more about it..... if you have time.

Pete

Mr Floppy, you are spot on :)

People seem to be plucked from obscurity & moulded into a brand that makes money for the greedy record companies. The only criteria you need, to be a success in popular music is to be un-opinionated & completely gullible  ::)

Trouble is with these kind of artistes is...they are only famous for 5 minutes until the next hideous creation comes along to replace them  :o

Treading the boards does still work for serious & talented acts, & although they may never hit No1 on 'top-of-the-pops' & sell 1 million singles in a week, they will always outsell the one hit wonders 1000 fold worldwide, & although the average teenager or granny may never have heard of them, they will still have a loyal fanbase which will number in the millions & who will always buy the records  :)

I never wanted to have a No1 hit, just a career that I knew I would enjoy & if that album had been released, then it may have lead to that, who knows ?....

But if the album had been released & flopped big time, then I'd still be where I am now...but at least I would have known......it's the 'not knowing what could have been' that is the most annoying part of the whole saga  ???

Pete....sorry if I made your wife cry....I wish I could say "I'll send a signed copy of the new single" to cheer her up  ;)

You sound like a very competent keyboard player Pete...didn't you ever think of becoming like Jon Lord with a stack of Hammonds ?  ;)

I lost interest in playing the electric guitar after the music career went t*ts up, & every time I pick the darn things up, I end up playing what I used to play.... & that just depresses me  :-/....just can't get those old songs out of my head  ::)

Still got my two fave electrics hanging on the wall (see earlier post) in the living room, but only ever tend to pick up an old 3/4 size classical that sits about the place  :)

Sorry if I hi-jacked your post Pete & that's the last I'm going to write about it  ;)

What's that noise ?.....sounds like 3000 members sighing with relief  ;)...... ;D

well that,s made a bit of intresting reading  ;) brings back old memories  ;D ;D.I used to be in a Van Halen cover band, but unlike you guys who were in it for the long haul,i was in it to pick up women & get free drinks  :-/,Which usually worked, but as the years as well as the weight went on,i finally realised i wasnt actually David Lee Roth & ended up as a Meat Loaf tribute act which lasted all of 6 months before i threw in the towel (i did however get an invite to audition for stars in there eyes...but bottled it). That was 12 years ago & in that time i got married, fat ,a morgage ,bald ,a son & lots of scorpios  ;D ;D ;D.My last performance was a "drunken" one at this years Billing !!! 4am & really really worse for wear.Had a laugh though, which at the end of the day,for me,thats what it,s all about  ;) ;D ;D

It seems getting involved in the Tribute Act scene  is a fair way of making a living while  still getting the thrill of playing and touring.

I saw  Who's Who  recently,  they're a cracking live band,    and just embarking on a tour  of  Germany and Scandinavia.  It's hard graft , but sure beats working for a living !

I had a god father who was a concert pianist and taught Derek Nimmo to play!! His wife was a violin teacher, my brother in law was in the army as a bandsman and is one of those peple who can pick up any instrument and after 10 minutes be playing it like a pro (he played the tuba when he was in the army and when he went to Iraq in the 1st Gulf War, the army wouldn't take his instrument because it was too big. So when the band did the Christmas Concert live on TV from the desert, they gave him a triangle to play and the camera even zoomed in on him for the big triangle finale!)
My dad was a good singer and my mum was a professional operatic soprano.

Me? I do a good Elvis at karaoke!

No Jon, I wouldn't claim to be that good, as I said I have taught myself, I manage with a few basic chords, I can only play things in certain (easy) keys and I rely on the automatics a lot, I used to think I was cheating realy, and maybe I am but the results are good and getting better.
If you sat me in front of a piano for instance I could play the melody but wouldn't be able to accompany it with the left hand and organ chords don't seem to sound right.  I probably should have had lessons.
When I have time I will do some recordings and post them up somewhere so you can see what I mean (maybe you wouldn't want to... ;D )

I come from a musical family. Mum used to sing and my dad played piano and piano accordion and my sister played piano a bit but was easily embarrased when doing so. I started putting dusters on my feet and playing on the linoleum fluently when I was about 4 or 5 ;) I progressed to a 12- string Vox acoustic guitar at 18, went on to electric - Burns and a Watkins Rapier (wow!) Met the future Mrs Pagey at 21, and sold all except the 12 string  :'( for to make dosh to get married. Still got it and a 6 string acoustic. The musical highlight of my life was chatting to Duane Eddy for 20 minutes at the Orchid ballroom Purley in about '68. Smashing bloke. Just tinker now and then but am easily wound up about what passes for music these days. Thank God there's still some of the old guys around. I try to get to see some of the tribute bands like Illegal Eagles, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac and Think Floyd for instance. Good stuff.Leaves all this "created" rubbish standing. Long may they reign.

Sounds great Pete, takes me back to the posturing in the dance halls! It's good to hear about all you boys with a musical bent and particularly the saga of Jonnycab, bless him.Do we think that music and Scorps are somehow intertwined ?
My old Dad also bought me a decent harmonica when I was 12,we lived in the back of beyond then(across two fields behind wittering aerodrome)so nobody could hear my attempts at music.I did become fairly accomplished though, and in later years my cousin(guitar)and I entertained the regulars in a local pub, sometimes till about 3am.To me life would be nothing without music,I always have something on in the hearse, but not whilst actually engaged on a funeral, though my passenger may appreciate it,you never know. It's the live uns you've got to consider!

well i dont beleeeeve it  ;)

what would we get if we had pete and jonny and baz doing a bit of elvis with a little bit of added operatic soprano in the vocals.... ;) .... band called the the p,j,b  ::)....

pete, i loved ya swan lake piece thats not easy to play....

jonny, i liked your clasical piece have it got a title? and also liked images of war.

baz we did not get to hear you sing... but im sure you are very good  ;)..

i did find this a very interesting read... and what happened to jonny still do happen today my nephew is in a band called cord they got signed up by island records
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZngfA-njZ-A
there first release was called winter , and island only produced a few thousand cd s for retail cord went stright in the chart at about 32.. but for the next week no one could buy the cd of them so they started droping back out of the chart very quick , then from there things went down hill for them next song was released what island had picked was a flop, they write all there own music and lyrics ..   one of lifes ups and downs ... i did know from the start that island records would be a bad move ... when they had multiple choice of record companys that had spotted them....

Love music (doesn't just about everyone?), esp. Dream Theater.

I'm a guitarist, fortunate enough to own an Ibanez JS10th (http://www.js10th.com/view.php?js=498) and play for a Ceilidh (for you English types, it's pronounced Kay-Lee ;) ) band called Fiddlesticks (http://www.fiddlesticksband.com/).

What a great thread!

AC/DC are one of my all time favourite bands, hoping to see them during their Uk tour. I went to see Gary Moore last November, he was amazing, he makes it all look so easy and never has a bad performance.

I've played the drums for the past 14 years, I'm getting the hang of them now. It took me a while to find left handed drum sticks, but since I've found them there's been no stopping me...

Semi pro Folksinger/songwriter here, with a well used 1978 Framus Nashville acoustic dreadnaught.

Battle scarred but still great to play (the Framus, not me.  Oh I don't know though).

Wrong genre, that's why semi pro.

You know what they say.  It's easy to make a small fortune as a folk singer. You start with a large fortune.....

I'll get me coat.
