Hopefully someone can give some quick advice ;)

My 4.0 litre Jeep Grand Cherokee (MK2) has been leaking ATF from the oil cooler in & outs to the radiator (not the pipe unions).

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had to saw through the bottom pipe in order to remove the union (pipe was turning/distorting while undoing union due to rust)....hence I need a new aluminium (shaped) pipe.

These pipes are not readily available so it may be a few days until I get a new one, but the car needs to be used in the meantime.

So my question is.......if I just connect the two oil cooler pipes together (no cooler) temporarily, for a few days, will the automatic transmission suffer too much from overheating ?......it'll only be used on short trips at low speed (less than 10 miles journey at any one time) & nothing stressful like towing or going up steep hills :)

As a fellow Jeep owner, if it was mine I would do what you are planning - doubt the fluid will get warm enough on short journeys to be of any concern.
There is a warning light on the dash for transmission fluid temperature I think ? If the light comes on then stop the car. Only concern would be what you are going to use to connect the 2 pipes together and if this would hold ? Not sure what the ATF pressure is - jubilee clips may not be upto the job, connections are usually crimped.
Is the ATF a good pink colour ?
Probably worth changing the fluid & filter at the same time as fitting the new pipes.
Just out of interest, are the new pipes expensive ?

Thanks for the advice Mike. Pressure shouldn't be problem as both pipes already are metal at cooler, then rubber (for flexibility), then metal again at the transmission (factory fit), so i'ts just a case of pulling off the rubber hoses & connecting the two transmission metal pipes with one of the hoses. Both hoses use constant pressure clamps at either end.

I did recently change the fluid & filter, so it's lovely & pink ;)

As for the price, I haven't rang around any dealers or shops, but I have found a brand new genuine Jeep pipe on Ebay for under £20 (it's only a short pipe), but it's gonna take a few days to get here....hence the need to possibly bypass the cooler :)

Thanks for the link Mike, but I managed to order one on Friday from Jeep main dealer in Chelmsford & will be collecting it on Tuesday....£19.50 inc vat :)

P.S....Jeep seems to be running fine with cooler bypassed ;)

£19.50 was neither cheap nor expensive.....about what I expected for a 6 inch piece of shaped aluminium pipe....

P.S...Mike, concerning parts...avoid 'Blue Print' pattern parts for Jeep at all costs....their thermostats & radiator caps etc are rubbish. I find it better to order genuine Mopar parts from the USA, as they are the real deal & are generally cheaper (inc shipping) than these crappy 'Blue Print' pattern parts made in the far east ;)

Looks nice JC - might have to give mine a wash.
I was told Jeep parts were really expensive so thought £19.50 was cheap for a Jeep part - but then I sort of assumed it was a much larger part.
Thanks for the tip about 'Blue Print' parts - the chap I've had stuff from supplies 'Crown' branded - I think they are from China, but so far all good.

Hi Mike, as far as I know 'Crown Automotive' parts are actually produced in the USA & they specialize in Jeep parts....so they are a company I would trust...In fact, I bought a 'Crown' idler pulley for the Jeep a little while ago & it was quality ;)

Hello I saw your post and well I know its a little old but as a huge Jeep guy, if your looking for parts for your inline 258. I would also suggest a catalog we use in the states. Its called JC Whitney. They deal with alot of Jeep parts, fairly inexpensive. Obvioulsy ebay is another great source. When I was back in the States I would go to those two sources to assit me when I was building CJ's and YJ's. hope this helps.
