Title: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by Andy on Sep 13th, 2004, 7:56pm Hi, Well as you can probably tell by the title i'm having trouble with the cooling fans on the car. When the keys are in it is fine but once you turn the ignition off and take the key out the fans start up. This only happens when it has rained heavy and on reading through the site it is probably something to do with the fuse boxes. I have tried spraying wd-40 into them as a desperate messure to stop the battery going dead but they stayed on and now the battery broken. Also when it has rained, about 50% of the time it won't start at all. It turns over but that's it. If anyone can shed any light on this it would be great. Thanks Andy |

Title: Re: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by craig on Sep 13th, 2004, 8:40pm well i think you have answered your own question,it really does sound like water in the fusebox (did you have the covers fitted ?),think the only way round it is to totally remove and dry the said item out,(several layers if i remember),and then hopefully should all be ok (dont forget relays etc.etc),and remember BATTERY AND FUSE BOX COVERS.. hth craig.. |

Title: Re: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by Andy on Sep 23rd, 2004, 6:40pm Hi again.. when things are bad, they sure are bad. I've Only just got a chance reply to this post as the computer went t**ts up just to add to my woos. Right anyway, is there any guide to stripping down the fuse boxes as i haven't really got a clue. I have got covers for the fuse boxes including that plastic tray that covers the battery as well. The compartments where the fuse boxes are look dry but is that normal even if they are damp? I took it to a local mechanic who seems think that the reason the engines not starting is that it could be a crank sensor and the reason for both fans being on is an air conditioning sensor. The reason i am asking on here again is that i'm not sure whether he knows what he's on about and is just having a stab in the dark at my expense. Quoted me £250 but said that it may not solve the problems. Does anyone know a mechanic around north london that deals with these cars that can help...... Thanks Andy |

Title: Re: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by Snoopy on Sep 23rd, 2004, 7:57pm The fuse Box is apperently quite and easy job but just looks daunting. There are members on her who have done the very same job.. the only advice I have is take your time take pictures and note where every thing goes.. There are I think four layers in the fuse box which need seperating and drying out, and cleaning. I amquite sure there are others on here will offer you more advice that I can.. Good luck have look here http://www.fordscorpio.info/fusebox2.htm |

Title: Re: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by SaveTheNight on Sep 23rd, 2004, 9:34pm hiya .. try drying the fuse-box out first with a hairdryer as this doesn't exactly sound like fuse box woes to me < may be wrong of course > .. not starting is probably the battery being dragged down by the fans ..the Scorp is about the only car that won't start with low battery voltage < needs at least ten volts to handle the electronics>..yet will crank over without giving the impression of a low battery .. so I think a touch more investigation first of the fan probs ..maybe check the green fan relay behind the headlight ..and no doubt everyone here will have views to add ... regards ...STN |

Title: Re: Cooling Fans Stay On when Keys out Post by Andy on Sep 24th, 2004, 12:53pm Back again, Well it does look like low voltage for the reason it has not been starting lately as i have just put the battery charger on it and it has started straight away so thanks to STN for that. As for this green relay. Is it the one behind the drivers headlight and what can i do to fix it (eg. try and clean or just get a new one.) If there is anyone who can give any advice on stripping the fuse boxes that would be helpful. The fans are not on at the moment but the day is still young so i am going to give it a go with the hairdryer while i can. Thanks again Andy |
