Title: 1996 scorpio auto box
Post by Jue280 on Oct 27th, 2004, 1:29pm
Can anyone help, I have a 1996 Scorpio auto that wont go into fourth gear, cruise control does not work either. I have replaced the speed censor took it to a ford dealer, they diagnosed it as the Turbine Speed sensor fault  they went to do the work butsaid this model gearbox didnt have one fitted. They then said the gearbox was defective. Sometimes the gear change is gentle other times it can be harsh also i have tried running it with the MAF disconnected. Would love to solve this problem as its doing my nut in, would greatly appreciate any advice/help.

I think you need to forget the Ford diagnosis for a bit and start again at the beginning.

First thing is to check the gearbox oil level & condition.
It needs to be a decent reddish colour. Dark brown/black is bad and would need changing.

Don't forget that to check the oil, the motor needs to be nice and warm. Then, park up, leave it running and select each gear in turn 2 or 3 times and end up back in Park. Then check the level.

If all this is fine and that MAF is bright & shiny, the next thing I would try is an OBD scan.
One thing at a time though. Good luck.  :)

Thanks for the info, is it an easy job to change the gearbox oil and will it make a big difference. Also does anybody have an OBD lead in the NorthEast area. When i had an electrical fault on my car an auto electrician plugged in his diagnostic machine and one of the faults was Speed Sensor Fault but Ford said the was no fault code for this when i took it there.

Hi Glenn.

If your oil is dirty, then I would suggest that you get it done at a proper garage.
The thing is, doing it yourself you can only get a certain amount of oil out. The rest needs pumping out. So you need someone who has the necessary equipment.

As for OBD... there must be someone up there willing to help.

did you get this problem solved .? my problem sounds similar. i changed vss cos speedo was reading wrong but gearbox dosnt seem to be working right still . engine revs to high above say 50 mph but at lower speeds drives great

No i still have this problem, another thing that happens that i forgot to mention is sometimes the rev counter goes erratic.Another query i have is do you need the relay in the glove compartment for the cruise control.More things that i have tried are, once i ran the car with the VSS disconnected this stopped the OD light flashing. This always starts to flash after about 50 feet. I have also tried a VSS out of a MK3 Granada this stopped the OD flashing, i kept the plastic drive spline on, the gearbox went through four gear changes but the speedo was ten miles out. Have also tried the VSS with the brown wire disconnected the same problem was there but the kickdown did not work, so as you can see i do not give in easily.

you could do worse than to find a decent autobox specialist who can run box with a breakout box to the gearbox and then run his laptop this should at least give you an idea if fault is mechanical or is an electrical problem ie wiring fault otherwise im afraid you will probably go down route of swapping and checking bits wich could cause you more probs in the long run

Not sure if this is any help but dont't forget the speedo is always out about 10%.

If the speedo says 80mph you are probably doing just over 70mph.

If you hold down the mileage reset button for about 10sec you get some computer readout's press is a couple of times and you get the VSS readout in KM, check this against the speed you are doing.
