Title: Intermittant Fault
Post by steve on Nov 20th, 2004, 4:01pm
Hello..  Can anyone advise on a problem that occures every now an then ?  I have a 2.5TDI 1996 and as said every now and then when I turn the Ignition key nothing happens, this could happen 2/3 times then it will start. I had the problem but only occasionally through the summer but the last 3 days when the weather has been realy cold it has got a lot worse, it usually happens when the car has been stood over night. I was advised it may be the battery or the alternator so I had them both tested and both found to be OK, the garage said it could be a faulty Ignition switch or even a starter motor fault ! I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similier problem and if so what was the cure ? hope you can help. ???

Steve...

I used to have this problem years ago with a  V6  Granada , after spending  lotsa  cash replacing starter motor  , battery  and ignition  switch ,  it turned out  to  be  that  one or more pistons  were  tending  to  seize up  overnight  and  the  starter  wasn't   powerful enough  to  turnover.

Steve,
This could be several things.
When you say you turn the ignition key and nothing happens, do you mean nothing at all? No clicks or anything?
If there are no clicks at all, it could be the PATS (Passive anti-theft module http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm resetting. Check the red dash light and see if it is flashing a code.
If there are clicks, it could be that the solenoid on the top of the starter motor is not closing properly. Does the starter motor click? Have an assistant listen when you turn the key.
It's also possible that the PCM relay is playing up. Check the above first and get back to us.

Thanks Eric, ..When the fault occures there is no CLICK at all when turning the ignition key  but it does click when I release the key !! I have no codes showing on the dash everything looks normal in that respect and it did not happen this morning it started as normal,  I dont know if this was because it was warmer last night ?
Thanks for the feed back look foreword to more of your help on this

Could be the solenoid on the top of the starter motor... they do get worn sometimes or even a bad connection to the starter it self well worth checking all the leads etc for tightness...or even take the starter off and give it a once over... does seem to indicate starter motor problems as a first option.... Hi,

Check that the engine have good earth contacts.
Simple thing but easyly overlooked.

You can test that with jumpstart cable connected between battery ´-´ and engine.

Run cable from battery negative to starter motor casing or engine block
