Title: Misfire on 2.3 16v
Post by Robby on Jan 21st, 2005, 6:56pm
My car has been working normally for ages, but tonight it started misfiring.  I think its down onto 3, possibly 2.  Sounds and feels rough and stinks.

The engine wiring harness was done about 2000 miles ago, so hopefully it isn't that again.  Service was 3000 miles ago, the plugs weren't changed because they were ok - is it likely to be them, or is there another gremlin I'm likely to have encountered?

Oh dear..

Do a search (not sure how good the search function is).. You will see lots of posts by me about this..

What is the harness you speak about? Is that the loom that runs up to and along the top of the engine?

How bad is it??

The loom was the one that goes on the 16vs - The one that runs around the tp and back of the engine, I think it does the wiring to the injectors too.

The misfire is really bad.  The whole car shakes on any acceleration, and won't really go above 35.

Going to have a look at the plugs this morning.

Leaving billing last year I lost a cylinder in my 98 estate.
With the caravan on the back it was a b****r, but it turned out to be a faulty plug, a propper platinum plug, but it had broke down after only 6000 miles.

Got to be worth a look, if not then coil packs are prone to go so check those next.

Right then, plugs are out.  The one on the middle cylinder that has an HT lead - not the one under the coil pack - is wet.

All are platinum tipped, all have been in there a while, and the very thin platinum electrode has worn away on all of them.  Curiously, the wet one looks the best out of all of them, but heres hoping its just plugs.

Otherwise, could it be wiring?  Does the scorpio fire a spark every 360 degrees, so it could just be the short HT lead or plug cap giving up.

Please not engine wiring harness again.

It shouldnt be the harness again, they last a few years, but plughs are a definate, I changed the lot while I was on, plugs and both Ht leads, as well as the other stuff filters and cleaned the maf, and I have had no problems with it at all.
Now my 24v thats a different story,mmmmm

As ever,I reccomend twin electrode plugs for the 4 pots  ::).

If the 2.3 uses the same plugs as the 2.0 then NGK BKR6EKC.

ps My owners manual was printed before the 2.3 was born.

A wet plug seems odd. Do you wet on the outside or on the electrode it's self?

Eddie - tell me more about these plugs - where can I get them from?

Right then.  Changing the plugs did nothing, new HT lead on that pot did nothing.

Garage picking it up on monday to have a look.  They did the wiring loom, and the mechanic is a genius.

Faulty coil is a possibility.  Certainly preferable to having all that wiring sorted out once again.

Scorpio electrics are a bit crap, no?

Just phoned the garage.  It was a coil pack.  Getting the car back this evening.

So I've had the wishbones, engine wiring loom, and coil packs  done so far.  Whats next in the list of quirky failures?

Good question Robby,

Just guessing, but something to do with airconditioning?

Or perhaps just a weedy sounding car horn (its the puddles wot do that) ;D

Make sure you lube the runners on your sunroof.

Happy motoring  :D
