Title: Changing the drive belt
Post by Robby on Jan 28th, 2005, 4:02pm
The drive belt on 2.3 has starting squeeking, so I bought a new one in halfords, and I've looked on the site for fitting.

Now, just to check.  The site says that you turn the nut on the tensioner pulley clockwise.  Does this slacken off the nut, or is it just to take up some of the spring tension and slide the belt off with my free hand while I hold the spring tension.

Also is there anything I should lube in that area while I've got it all apart?  I'm going to do a coolant change while I'm working on it and check my thermostat, because its behaving a little erratically - I think its sticking, so I'll poke it a bit and make sure its operationg properly, then put in some water pump lubricant with the new coolant.

Take care with the slackening process!

Take 1/2 a turn or so off the pivot bolt first, and put your weight on the pulley to see if it will move against the spring first.  I managed to strip the threads on mine,it may have been seized.

Yes, the idea is to put the appropriate socket on the pulley nut with the ratchet handle near horizontal to your right and apply pressure till the arm moves against the spring pressure.
Incidentally, are you sure you have the right belt from Halfords? The one I bought for a scorpio was totally the wrong length, and they didnt list/stock any others.

I have the only belt halfords had listed also - I'll be holding it against the pulleys to see if it looks right first.

So basically the pulley is on a pivot arm, and I want to give it some slack at the base of the pivot arm and then put pressure on the nut on the pulley to move it down, change the belts, then do the pivot arm bolt back up again.  Probably with some grease at the base of the arm if its obvious and simple, to allow it to move nicely.

Thers no need to take the pulley off just take the tension off the belt...  By appling pressure in the direction indicated will release the tension enough to get the belt off . Remove the old one and then fit the new one.... Release the tesioner slowly... I must admit it does help to have a extra 'HAND' when doing this as removing and fitting a belt one handed is quite difficult   Read this first
