Hi,
I am having problems with my car,My heads needed to be skimmed so my lad tore into stripping the top of the engine without marking anything up.I have rebuilt the engine, put timing marks at 15 deg b.t.c and rotorarm/distrib at number 1 firing,but car wont sart. Is there any way that I can test the injectors are firing in the correct order without spraying petrol everywhere?(the injection plugs may or may not be put on correctly.)

They should be numbered on the wiring with little white labels but if not then the colours of the wire can be found here http://www.carsoft.ru/avtorepair/sierra/engcntrl29a.pdf

No 1 is the left hand side front looking into the engine bay FYI

As a new member don't be confused by the wording 'Sierra' in the link. The diagrams ARE for the Scorpio as are the others accessed from this site.Good luck.Snoopy being old just knows these things!!!. ;)

Hmm well its quite hard to connect the injecters up wrong as they would not look right & the wires are trimmed to fit. You should have connected a couple up correctly at least which would let the engine try to start & it could just about run.
Is it firing at all?
Get the rotor to no.1 again then turn the engine in the direction of normal running until no.1 cylinder is at TDC then reset the distrubter.

I will be trying to start the car today but my lad says that because I had had 4 thou skimmed off the heads, I will have to reset the tappits. As the engine has hydrolic tappets I wouldnt have thought 4 thou would have made a difference.
Your thoughts on this.......?

Tappets are hydraulic and 4 thou should be OK

Good news! I have got it runningAlthough it sounds like a tractor. I put engine tdc, put rotor at position 1, but it wouldnt go. so I turned dissy anticlockwise about 5 degrees whilst cranking engine and it runs.but not on tick over, about 1200 revs it runs but less and it stalls.I rang around for crypton tuner but no-one will touch it as they say its all set up by the ecu and there is nothing physicaly they can change ie advance/retard, mixture ect. any ideas please.

OK have you got the firing order correct 1-4-2-5-3-6 and you can use a timing light on the timing marks on the pulley wheel on the 12v.... It is set using a laser in the factory but it is possible to adjust on the 12v as it has a distributor and a coil... it i OLD technology not like the 2.3 and 24v jobbies

Put some tippex or white paint on the marks .... It helps

Sounds like you have totaly mucked up the ignition.
Best thing you can do is to get yourself a late MK3 Granada haynes manual for the 2.9 12V & follow that. Make sure you follow & connect everything up to the book. Can't use the manual for the rest of the car but the engines are just about same.

Firing order is correct, 142536, Where do I attach this strobe light? is it ciol + and earth? (Its been a while since I worked on an engine, My ford Seirra I think.....)
Then I just time the engine 15 deg btdc, (Its got a cat!)
Just remembered.. there is a small pipe at front of car, cable tied to a radiator hose one end and goes into a small electric thingy just under the expansion tank, I dont ever remember seeing it attached to anything so I assume that its not important?(headlight wash perhaps)

No 1 Cylinder and earth and you might need battery as well if it is a powered version ( Best option)
any good friendly garage should be able to help out really if you are unable to do it.

Try doing it static first.

Have you tried moving the dizzy by hand while engine is running to get best running?

Sometimes works to get you mobile....

GOOD NEWS-BAD NEWS.
I did the timing and it ticks over a treat, but when I drained the sump It was full of a frothy coffee mixture of oil/water. I followed the step by step instructions from the technical pages, tourqe settings etc but obviously something is not right. I had 12000 skimmed of the heads and not 4000 (so my lad informs me-he had them done for me) perhaps too much has been taken off and they are now scrap.......I even took the inlet manifold off and reseated the valley gasket because someone said that it is prone to leaking from there if not fitted properly.Anyone got a spare engine???

I take it you have done an oil change since rebuilding the engine & did you make sure the block surface was clean before refitting the head ( no old gasket stuck to it)?

Yes, I cleaned everything before the rebuild, Changed the oil filter and oil , Dont know where water is comming from but I will undo all I have done (again) and see if there are any teltail water marks on gaskets etc to help solve this mystery.
I ll let you know how I get on.......

Bad news Im afraid. Having stripped the heads off I found that the right hand head is cracked across waterways so they are scrap after all. I will have to find a replacement engine as I cant live without my scorp, Its too d**n good a car to scrap.
