Title: Fuel smell
Post by Wafoo on Sep 26th, 2005, 3:29pm
My 98 Cossie Scorpio has a strong fuel smell around it,filled the tank the other day and it appeared to leak from the tank area, stripped the tank down, seems fine, take the cap off and you get a rush of air into it,so seems solid, anyone any ideas where it could be coming from?

The rush of air should be out not in but I think thats what you felt/heard.. Have a look around here it might help but if there is pressure in there then you have no leaks.

Was it just a dry seal around the pump or something like that...

You say you have checked and all fine then surely there is nothing to worry about

Thanks for that, could be a seal I suppose, just the wife has gone into paranoia mode smelling it everywhere!
Got me out of a trip to IKEA but now in full on nagging mode!

I had same problem with mine and in the end brought a new tank.
Upon taking the old tank out I noticed that the sender unit was not fully located into its mounting and the stains on the take showed thats was were  it weeped slightly when full.
I fiited the new tank anyway but a few blows with cold chisel and hammer to make sure the sender unit was fully home would have done the trick.

Just a thought.

Does anyone know if the sender unit is mounted along side the fuel pump in the tank? I remember seeing a big round disk that looked like it was the electronic fuel pump located on top of the tank. This could also be another possible escape route for the fuel/vapor.

Just another thought
