Hi all

More an inconvenience than a problem this one but my tailgate lid has taken to acting unusually.

Eseentially when the tailgate is slammed more often than not it will open itself again - and therefore has to be slammed at least 3 times before it stays shut.

It doesn't come open spontaneously - eg when driving or when the rest of the car is locked, it is only when the boot is already open and is then closed.

The latch is not bent and nor is the "open the boot" button on the remote jammed pushed (as this happens regardless of which set of keys I have on me). The boot opens correctly either with key, push, or remote.

Any ideas as to how I might deal with this?

Must be a locking pin/catch problem, is it sticking? maybe the pin is worn? Some people have a rattle which can be sorted for a while with tape round the pin,

Yes it does rattle a bit as well come to think of it. Thanks for that I'll try taping it up in the morning.

I had this and finally realised that it was the tailgate manual pushbutton that was not coming all the way out. WD40, etc and has been fine since.

where did you find your manual pushbutton for the tailgate? I don't seem to have one (not Ultra) ???
rather than using tape on the catch, just rotate the plastic sleeve through 180 degrees with a pair of pliers, it only wears on one side (inner)....that should do for another 100K

Dave, WHERE did you find your manual pushbutton for the tailgate? (not what is it! :))

I'm beginning to wonder if you are referring to the actual keybutton that should press in?....mine never has, but after freeing up the mechanism at the weekend it now at long last operates by turning the key.....(see my other post on the subject)....I thought that there maybe another internal button in the car to operate the tailgate that I had missed. ???

He probably refers to the lock barrel, which works as an electric button to open the tailgate. Push on the center of the barrel and it _should_ unlock. If not, soak it in WD40, leave it for a while, and try again..

Looks like I will have to dismantle it all again now and get the hot air gun on it...... there is no way that the barrel will move in situ..... it took a couple of hours 'jiggling' to get full rotation on the lock....the alloy housing is well corroded, must be salty roads :-/...... if anyone else is doing this ,watch out for the solenoid ram that will crush your fingers when fiddling with the microswitches there :'(

Hmm.. I taped up the pin and that stopped the rattle, but it didn't stop the problem of the door opening itself after being closed.

Is barrel you put the key in meant to be a push-button - is it meant to move? Mine doesn't and I wonder if it might be jammed in the "open" position. Can anyone give me some advice as to how I might free it if this should be the case? Spraying it with WD40 alone did not do it - so what do I need to remove to get at it?

looks like you have the same problem as me..... the barrel is stuck. To free it you have to remove the interior trim panel screws, and the 'handle' mouldings....then undo the 10MM nuts (about 10 of them) holding the numberplate/ reversing light assembly.... one or two other screws beneath the numberplate too..... then you can get access to the two bolts/nuts that hold the lock assembly in place..... disconnect the actuating arm from the plastic disc that operates the two microswitches.... they unclick too... to remove the assembly..... you should be careful about actuating that ram (above) :'( if you have not disconnected the battery first.... as you say, WD40 on its own probably wont do..... I used a hot air gun (paintstripper) to get the lock assembly really hot... mine was quite corroded, and needed a lot of heating/squirting/cooling/ cycles to free it off.
