Title: Brake lights
Post by jonnycab on Apr 8th, 2006, 8:41pm
I've just finished replacing the heater matrix in my 2.3 Auto (a job I never want to have to do again). To gain better access to the matrix I removed the brake pedal but unfortunately I broke the plunger off the brake light switch, which would mean the brake lights stay on permanently.
I bought a second hand switch from the breakers & put it in, but my brake lights still remain permanently on.
Would the second hand switch be faulty, or would there be another explaination?

I will try that, but surely a switch is a switch & if you replace it then it should work as the old one did.

I fitted the switch before I put the servo rod sleeve back on, so the pedal was not touching the plunger when re-fitted, so plunger was already fully extended.

The switch that broke was the green one. I assume that this is brake light switch.

Simple way to test:  turn igntion on (engine stopped) and have assistant observe brake lights - they should go out when you push the plunger in on the switch.  If they don't go out it's a bust switch, if they do then you need to adjust the position on the bracket so that the lights are off with the pedal in the released position, but come on within about 1-2cm of pedal travel.

However, it is possible that your car has cruise control, in which case (if there are two switches fitted), one will be for that...

There is no adjustment & I do have cruise control.
My wife stood behind the car when I switched on ignition (engine stopped) & the brake lights were on.
Me thinks that the second hand switch is faulty...
Time to get the switch cleaner out....again.....

I must apologise to anyone that gave me advice about re-setting the switch (I doubted the advice). I thought the switch was fully out, but after pulling it a bit harder it came further out. The brake lights are now working as they should.
Thanks all for the advice.
P.S. I also own a Mk1 3.0L Granny & when a switch goes in that you just replace it....simple....these modern cars?......I dunno?
