hi all

I'm going to change my exhaust manifold gaskets tomorrow are there any problems i should look out for

Don't do it after the car has been run....they be hot!!

Seriously though, you may get to break a few nuts or studs. You may need to heat them up to get them off easily....why are you changing them?

the gaskets are blowing a bit
the exhaust is all ok there dont seem to be any cracks in the manifold but have 2 spare ones on stand by in case i need them

If it is the 24V, disconnect the EGR valve at the diafram end and try not to disturb at exhaust.(very difficult to re-aline)good fitting sockets,10,13,15mm,and (6BA stud replacement),spare nuts,gaskets.Where the CAT flange meets the down pipe,loosen from underneath (two extension bars 15mm socket)
A set of ramps are necessary, a hoist is ideal.
Easy job take your time.

If the 'blowing' is where the manifold meets the block, then I don't think you'll have too many problems. Those nuts seem to come undone pretty nicely and don't chew up either.

If its where the manifold meets the downpipe, you could be in for trouble. Rapped knuckles, rounded and/or snapped nuts/studs seems pretty normal.

In either case, access can be a problem.

Give the whole lot a REALLY good spraying of WD40 overnight before you do the job. Like, really soak it. This will help to penetrate and hopefully loosen up the bolts & studs etc. It's amazing how effective this is, and the longer it soaks in, the better.

Put an old tarpaulin or something under the engine if you are worried about spoiling a driveway . Weight it down with a few bricks.

Obviously don't spray it on unless the manifold is absolutely COLD!! :)

cheers for info its a 2.9 12v

its were the manifold meets the head

have been soaking nuts with wd40 for 3 nights

The 12V manifolds are easier to work on then the 24V but the nuts tend to be harder to remove. Just take your time & try not to be heavy handed unless you have to.
Soaking in WD40 is a good start ;)

just an update found out why its blowing nearside ex manifold had 2 broken studs at back i managed to get 1 out the other is snapped in the head so drill and tap time is ahead

all done it ok now fitted new studs and nuts while i was at it
total price for gaskets from fords & studs and nuts from local factor's just under £20

It's good to know things can be fixed on the scorpio and for a reasonable price too.

Your success has inspired me to give my "no spark" problem a serious go tomorrow.
