Hi everybody.

Just wondering if the new scorpio has the same common fault with the rusty rear arches as the Granada always had.

My 2.9 12v M reg Granada Scorpio saloon will need replacing soon due to this (I've had it for 10 trouble free years) and I'm wondering if the new model can expect to have the same problem - just in case I happen to come accross a nice 97/98 Ultima that takes my fancy.

Yes unfortunately it does, something to do with it being two pieces of metal overlapping and moisture getting trapped between the two :(

Maybe it also has to do something with the weather / country zone. My scorp after 10 years, the only rust it has is on the boot lid, because in my case the drain holes weren't cut properly and water after the rain wouldn't go anywhere. Beside this it's clean and shiny, eaven under the car....

apparently the later scorpio's are worse than the earlier ones as well....

Oh well... looks like I need to think of a complete change then.

This car is my 4th 2.9 and it's still so good I'd be happy to keep it forever. But once the rust gets going there's apparently no long term cure...

you can (if your lucky) get replacement arches as they do come up for sale (every so often i must add) on ebay,wasn't it barry who managed to get hold of the last set on there :-/

My 98 S reg is suffering from slight rust on the rear passenger side, but yes Craig is right, I got a pair of Ford genuine arches for about £20.00 a few months ago. Still in primer and packed away for future use!!

i found a cheap solution to getting rid of rust round the rear arches. no way to no for sure if it would be a permanent fix but it did me proud for 3 years then i sold the car. who knows it could still be ok. here is what i did. i sanded down the arches to bear metal and wear the rust had eaten the metal away i cut it out. i patched up the holes wiv some fibre glass and then coverd the hole thing in rust proof primer. then i orderd a set of chrome arches and fixed them over the top. it looked great and no more rust. my new scorpio is getting the same treatment in a couple of weeks.

The secret in a repair is to try to do the job without generating heat.

Modern manufacturing techniques create less opportunities for corosion, so rivets, glassfibre, superglue solutions to put new metal in place start to look like a good idea, having removed the rotten stuff.

People still braze veteran and vintage cars, I wonder if that is a better low heat fix than welding.

Brazing still creates too much heat from a corrosion point of view. It was mostly used in automotive because it doesn't distort panels as much as welding.

Apologies for the lateness of the responce, but I have just joined the site.

Many years ago, I was told that lead was often used for filling and repairing such damage.

Don't touch lead filler with a barge pole, even if you could still get it. Nasty stuff.

Got the rusty arches coming on mine, where the arch meets the rear bumper. Going down the glassfibre route, looks like it'll prove worse than it looks above the paint. Places which have suffered on mine seem to be the door bottoms and the arhces, can't see any other signs of it.
