Hi everyone i have a problem on my 2.3 1998 estate.The rear offside shock absorber is leaking oil ,I asked my local parts shop for a price on new ones but they said that they cost £285.00 each as they are self levelling ive also looked on the ford disc to see whats involved in changing them and it looks a right pig.After removing my wheel for a closer look yesterday i wonder if all the work is nessasary and if theres an easier way of doing it. Whats special about these shockers they look just the same as standard ones. Im not sure what my best way to proceed is at the moment and would welcome any comments/ advise from members.

If the damping is still ok then i would leave it. Even four the mot as long as the damping ok it will pass

Any sign of fluid leaking from a damper will lead to a MOT failure I'm afraid. ???

The shocks I believe are called Nivomat, They pump themselves up depending on the weight of the load while moving, As for removing them i'm not sure but some are breaking estates on here so they may be able to help you out with them.

Thanks for the replies i think im going to be looking for a second hand unit from breaking, Ideally i would have liked to fitted a new pair but that would be well out of my price range as i've recently spent about £500.00 on parts for it and the exaust looks on its last legs as well now.

Mines a 96 estate and failed its MOT on a rear shock and corrosion around the area of the rear spring. Yes this really hurt as I was told it would be about £35 for a new one but I believe only Ford do the self levelling Estate ones and this was £250. Thank God I did not need two. Tried to get one from a breakers and found one but somebody came along and bought the whole car just after I left the yard. I needed my car back on the road quickly so told them to go ahead.
I was not aware of this corrosion around the area of the rear shock and spring otherwise would have made some attempt of trying to stop it which I will do on the other side. So beware everyone of this as again its quite pricy as the suspension needs lowering before it can be welded.
