Hi Kim!

I've got the symptoms too and I've questioned all the lads here and got a pile of very good glues:

* MAF - That could be the one, have you already cleaned it? There's a very good
description on these web-sites how to do it. That's an easy way to start.

On my Cossie, with the exactly same symptoms, it did not help. But I was about
to buy a scanning tool anyway, so I've been just waiting for that. And now I've
got data that two lambda's are broken (P1131 & p1151 codes are detected).

If you're interested in that, those scanners are not so "expensive" today.
I got mine in 150 euros + postage in Finland. www.scantool.net is just
one option and ElmScan5 would be your tool. It works on Scorpio!

Good luck! With the amount of knowledge that has been piled up in these
website and in this forum, you'll get it sorted out for sure.

Hi Pappa,
Thanks for that site. £ 105 delivered from www.motorscan.net  Cleaned maf, battery reset, new plugs.,air filter ,new leads sweet talked and stroked it nicely but to no avail. ....The scanning tool sounds great, but no laptop and after going through the explanations of how to read results, pretty intimidating stuff, think I will have to find a garage with enough expertise to help , but where, any Ideas ,    cheers Kim

Hiacekim. Wait until Sunday and see if you can get it scanned before going to a garage. We usually have a member with a laptop there.

Yeah get it scanned as it could be a few things.
At least the code reader will give you a clue where to start ;)

"Anyone know where i can get a O.B.D scan done  Have done the basics to the 1996 24v but still very slugish and has a hesitation when at cruise .."

I had this trouble, and it turned out to be the EGR valve sticking.  The chap at the garage uncoupled a pipe, blocked one end with a large screw, and no problems since.  Said I didn't need the EGR anyway, just cakes up the top of the engine.  The car has passed two MOTs since then with no emission problems!

Don't know if this is your problem, but the symptoms are the same as I had on my 24v.

Regards.

Roger.

Hello Kim, I'll try my best to explain where it is.  It is very easy to get at and split.

Looking into the engine bay from the driver's side (over the off-side wing), there is a black plastic pipe - about 3/8 inch diameter -  coming from behind the back of the engine (between the top of the engine and the bulkhead).

This pipe curves forwards and runs close to the engine lifting lug.  At about this point it converts into a rubber pipe about 1/2 inch diameter, which runs down to a valve situated about 10-12 inches below the brake fluid reservoir.  This pipe connects to one connection on the valve, and an identical pipe runs off the second connection of the valve. The connections are only about 1/2 inch or so apart (it is not a big valve).

The chap at the garage simply cut the pipe close  to where the plastic pipe runs into the rubber pipe and bunged up the end of the pipe that runs to the valve, i.e. the rubber section. The plastic pipe end he left open.

A picture would have been better, but I don't have a digital camera to hand!

Hope you can make sense of this!

Regards.

Roger.

Understood!

Even if it doesn't work, disconnecting the EGR system is no bad thing.

The chap who disconnected mine is a specialist in this sort of thing, he's got lots of expensive gear and gets all the difficult jobs from the big local franchised dealers when their own mechanics can't solve the problem.

He was saying that someone at Ford decided it was a good idea to add EGR as it pampered to some European regulation on exhaust emissions.  In fact the reduction is very small, it carbons up the top of the engine, and the car falls well within any pertinent emission regulations without EGR anyway!

And EGR valves are notorious for sticking partly open.

Interesting to hear how you get on.

Regards.  Roger.
