Title: Car feels like its pulling back!!!!!
Post by dete on Sep 19th, 2006, 9:46pm
HI all, wondered if anyone could help.  We recently bought a scorpio 2.9 cosworth 1997 and its absolutely fab!  We had a full service done on it, and I (blushing here) let it run really low on petrol (down to about 30 miles)! now it seems to have this pulling back feeling and its more noticeable going up hills!  My husband put some injector cleaner (???) in, but we can't get rid of this feeling.  Does anyone know whats caused it..... could it be me letting it run low on fuel?  What would be a solution.  Thanks in advance.

Hi dete, and welcome.
It is possible that running it low on fuel could end up with blocked filters etc.
However, Mine regularily gets to less than 30 miles left in the tank with no adverse effects. Having said that my tank is relatively new so should not have to much crud to pick up.
Was it runnining fine before it was low on fuel.
I.E. did the symptoms arrise quickly after refueling?

If not a fuel problem, then possibly an ignition problem.
Holding back under acceleration, especially up hill, indicates the coil packs (ignition modules) have seen better days.
Also check spark plugs & HT leads. :)

Thanks, actually I do find it better when it has fuel in so maybe it is a fuel problem.  We are going to book it into the garage next week so at least we have some ideas of what to tell them to look for.  Thanks again Karen

You might just save yourself a big garage bill if you take your car for a good long FAST run.

Up to about 120 ....(meant 70 of course)......  8)  8)

In a Cossie.....yeah right!  I think you get my drift. Let the horses out..............Weeee Ha!!  ;D

If, as I suspect, you've sucked up a load of S**T from your tank, then you'll get symptoms just like you've described.

I don't think it's coil packs. If it was, they would still be giving you problems at all times.

Running it at a fast speed will clear the lines out again, and half a tank of fuel will certainly cost you a lot less than "Bloggs Motors" will charge you!!  Then you can ring him and cancel your appointment, and spend the rest on Vodka!! :D  :D

more suspect is cat problem, cars dont ' suck up s--- from the tank when you run low, the fuel is picked up from the bottom even when full.

Now I've just read the last post and it could be a CAT problem........ Im not gonna say anything catty about that!  I think we need to get the garage to look..... I'll let you all know what it turns out to be !

Hi dete,

as was mentioned in another thread - if you thinks its the cats why not try to get a scan from an honest member of the club first rather than go to a garage who may not understand the car. Best source for scans are local meets.

BTW, I've let mine get down to "0 miles" left in tank with no probs (I filled up shortly afterwards). Funny though, it always seems better after a top up - a bit like me and a pint of Harveys  ;)

Harveys best bitter - won the CAMRA best bitter award 2005 & 2006  :D.
Simmo doesn't drink anything else  ;) and will be bringing some to the Kent meet.   :-*

Can still run on 0 miles but taking a chance. However, this is the calculated amount left in tank. Last time this happened I started at 10 miles left, then zero, then by time I got to garage I was up to 5. Its all down to the computer working out current mpg, petrol left, etc etc.
