Title: hunting tickover Post by ferretmobile on Oct 5th, 2006, 3:40pm I have a 2.3 saloon with nearly 100,000 on the clock, it drives ok and starts up every time, but when the engine is warm the tickover seems to give a little cough every few seconds. The problem has been there for six months or more so it isnt getting any worse..yet. but its enough to annoy me and I dont know where to look around a hot engine, without getting burnt. hmmm. Do any of you wise sages know what this could be or do you think that I should give the beast to fords and let them play with my wallet }{ I have a feeling that you are going to say that there is probably a leak in the vacuum somewhere. Ah but where. I have tried listening for some sort of hisss but with head under bonnet and engine noise covering up most other noises, fat chance. Years ago, I had a hillman Imp with twin carbs which when not blowing head gaskits went like the wind. But I used to tune the carbs by listening with a length of timber one end on the carbs and the other wedged in me earhole...worked a treat ;) but for the life of me all I can hear with the scorp is engine. Just as well really, wouldnt want to hear anything else. Any road up, does anybody have a clue as to what is making the engine "blip" every few seconds? I do hope that you do. Cheers Ferret Oh highlander, the nearest town to where I stay is Montrose and the distillery is Fettercairn. ;) I can recomend it ::) |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by taliban on Oct 5th, 2006, 3:53pm twin carbed imp eh? 10 years ago i had a twin carb wolsley, the bit of wood as a engine stethoscope is a great idea........for carbs, the scorp engine is far too complicated and is governed by electrics, and thats where i think most people would suggest looking (other than is the air filter clean?), i.e. is the MAF clean? any members near you that can do an OBD scan? |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by taliban on Oct 5th, 2006, 3:56pm also, use ford as a last resort, they'll probably take the car for at least a day, give it back when your bank account has been bled dry, 'borrow' a couple of cd's from your autochanger, then say no fault found... |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by ferretmobile on Oct 5th, 2006, 4:03pm Air filter...DOH! never thought of that one. I will put a new one in this weekend and see what happens. If the weather is kind then I will also get some switch cleaner and do the MAF. Is this an easy job TB? any pitfalls to watch out for? cos I am probably the bloke that the phrase was designed for."JESUS! that nearly had me eye out!....now where did it land? }{ |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by Simmo on Oct 5th, 2006, 4:33pm Cleaning the MAF is probably the most simple operation of all. It's detailed HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm). Just be sure NOT to TOUCH the sensors you will see inside the sight tube. They are as fine as a bulb filament.Just spray again if they are not clean the first time. When you replace the air filter check a little 'pocket' at the back of the unit which should have a small piece of foam rubber inside it to filter the exhaust vapour from the engine. They are often neglected, rotted to 'dust',or not there. Worth a look. |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by Simmo on Oct 5th, 2006, 5:03pm Don't forget to refit the electrical connector when you put it all back together.....you wouldn't be the first !!.... as it easily hangs down out of sight. ;) |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by ferretmobile on Oct 11th, 2006, 3:20pm Hi guys, as promised I would get back to you regarding the hunting tickover. I cleaned out the MAF as instructed on this site (good information) and as you said its an easy job to do. I also changed the air filter. The old one was very manky. I did have a bit of bother getting hold of one, cos halfords dont carry this item in stock (only special order) so I phoned up my local Fords dealers and picked up one on my way home on Monday. Job done. I have to say that the engine is running a lot sweeter..............However this annoying little hunt or clunk is clearer now and I am certain that this noise is comming from somewhere underneath. It is certainly a clunk when the motor is hot and when in neutral. Now I am suspecting the drivetrain or propshaft kindoff catching up with its self, or am I talking danglers. I normally do. ::) Any advice would be very welcome........subject related {} |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by tintin on Oct 11th, 2006, 8:50pm have a similar issue with my idle, still getting to the bottom of it. i have so far, in order, - cleaned MAF - replaced air filter - replaced spark plugs - replaced IACV with 2nd hand one - had a scan, replaced FPR (new) - idle now "sticking" at 1500rpm for 10 secs - fixed air leak caused by garage doing FPR - no.1 spark plug blew, replaced again - replaced IAT (second hand) - back to stage 1, idle still hunting, now also sticking at 1200rpm for 10 secs my next port will be injector wiring i think ??? or oxygen sensors..... not sure if this helps, but is the route i took......sometimes better to leave sleeping dogs lie? |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by ferretmobile on Oct 12th, 2006, 2:33pm What do you think about the ABS valve...does this have an affect if this is a bit duff? |

Title: Re: hunting tickover Post by GrahamT on Oct 13th, 2006, 12:51am How confident are you of the second hand IACV?? Did you fit a new gasket? It sounds A LOT like the problem I had before I fitted a new IACV. I tried cleaning mine but it didn't do any good. I then tried dismantling it as far as I could and ended up destroying it, hence having to buy a new one! It did the trick but they ARE expensive :-( May be worth cleaning the throttle housing and butterfly, sometimes the butterfly doesn't sit tight on the housing if it's dirty. Good luck, Graham |
