Title: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by vaughant on Oct 10th, 2006, 4:05pm Hi all, and may I start by saying that this is a very impressive website with some obviously technologically gifted people on here.........or people with just a lot of persistance. ;D ANYWAY, let the problem unfold. I have recently obtained a `95 Cossie Ultima saloon with 132k on the clock. The car has an FSH and up to 110K at the main dealer. This maybe a common problem to these, but what happens is when you start the car ( first time of course) it runs lovely, no rattles noise or leaks, but starts to just puff a little. As soon as you then rev it,clouds everywhere of white smoke which smells very rich of petrol. BUT, the car dosen`t use any oil, dosen`t overheat,no missfires and the power is impressive, as i`ve had many quick cars in the past and this one really shifts :-/.My plan was in all honesty to buy just to break it for a bit of cash, but on ny drive home I realised what a stunning car it is,every gadget works, mint leather, good tyres etc. so I would LOVE to keep this to spin about in, don`t worry about petrol!!! PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!! I know your all in a catch 22 as well, as this WILL be broken/sold cheaply if the engine problem is mega because parts seem hard to come by these day`s for these car`s, especially when it has a 36K mile autobox on it like mine!!! All replies greatly appreciated, even if there just funny ones! I`ll keep this post up for a week or so and if there`s no response then she`ll be in the breakers section, which would be a big shame TBH. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by Simmo on Oct 10th, 2006, 7:17pm Yes that's what he means. However a number of the members here are able to do this with their own lap-tops. You need to indicate whereabouts you live in the Country and see if there is anyone near you who would be able to do a scan for you. Have a read of THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obdfaq.htm) |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by clarkster on Oct 10th, 2006, 9:26pm I had a calibra turbo that did exactly the same, it turned out that a previous owner had removed the thermostat. The ECU decided that it was permanently cold and continously over fueled the engine, resulting in big white clouds of petrol smelling smoke! |

Interesting, seems a very similar fault, for want of a modern explanation, like the choke is stuck on!! |

Yes sorry folks, that would help!! I`m in Swansea, South Wales and also I wouldn`t expect someone to come round for nothing. Forgot to mention this too guy`s, but the former keeper tell`s me that this fault only occurred after the car had been standing for sometime ( couple of months), a new battery was fitted and whilst idling for a while it ran out of fuel. He then put a can of fuel in and took it out for a spin and then noticed the plooms of smoke? The car had absolutely no previous engine issues whatsoever. |

Was he SURE that the can was clean? Small amounts of water or other contaminants can probably do some nasty stuff... I'm far from any expert, so take my advice with a full box of salt, but to me it sounds like something has made it into the petrol back then. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by TiberiuS on Oct 11th, 2006, 7:26pm White smoke? - Bad spark plug? Bad fuel injector? Can't remember who it was on here who ran out of fuel and got the white smoke and got it sorted with new plugs, there's a post about it from a few weeks back, mabye that can help you :) Regards, Bruce. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by tintin on Oct 11th, 2006, 8:40pm that was me ;D didnt run out of fuel, was just very low and used a "local" garage. thought i had got dodgy fuel (still suspect it). mine smoked when at idle, cleared up when up to speed, still ran "ok" up to 70mpg with one down, no.1 spark plug was blown (new as well !), worth a check but you dont have exactly the same symptoms. make sure you get the platinum tipped ones if you are going to get one to try in each cylinder, or just replace all... hth |

Thanx again guy`s these are some really good suggestions, but that`s the wierd thing about this fault, the car still drives great, no missing at all, although i can`t be certain, it does seem AWFUL on petrol....but Ford V6`s usually are!!!!! One other thing that sprung to mind, when I dipped the oil when I first saw the car, it did seem a little high, and quite black, not sludgy though, nice and smooth. Now when i got home, i dipped the oil again and it seemed really clean, but a bit bubbly, although as I previously mentioned, no noises or hot running WIERD eh? Keep the suggestions coming all, as it`s making my tiny brain operate at a higher level!!! |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by vaughant on Oct 11th, 2006, 8:55pm Also, i`ll chuck some fuel in the beast, and take some photo`s of it running, maybe you lot can see something I can`t, it`ll be a few day`s though, working 12hr`s for the next three day`s. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by tintin on Oct 11th, 2006, 8:58pm yep, mine seemed fine when the foot was down, just a little sluggish, amazing this V6 can run on 5 cylinders so well ! just juddered at idle with lots of white smoke (smelled very dieselly), and ate petrol round town. even the garage was surprised it was the plugthey were sure it was h/g....try plugs/leads, otherwise get a scan as suggested to see what the engine is doing. my '95 cossie has 100k on the clock, is getting 300 miles on the tank mixed driving, 350 on the motorway. my average reads 23mpg round town and 30mpg on the motorway at "usual" speeds. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by taliban on Oct 12th, 2006, 12:08am oil smoke is usually blueish, black normally means the mixture is too lean, white smoke......i cant remember ::). once you've sorted the smoke issue, no matter how clean it looks or what the previous owner has said, i would change the oil, it could save your pocket in the long run. modern engines are sophisticated as are modern oils, but the oil gets a right pounding through its life suffering high temperatures and pressure, and especially as its a cossie, use the best quality fully synthetic you can afford..... |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by Dave2302 on Oct 12th, 2006, 1:16pm Hi M8, Also check the connection on the engine temp sensor, (the one that does the engine management with 2 wires), I've seen these go green when the cars stand and then it is just like you've left the choke on coz the ecu thinx the engine is stone cold all the time ! VERY common and dead easy to check / sort. Regards Dave |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by vaughant on Oct 12th, 2006, 6:28pm Wow you guy`s are really quick on here, thanks again. It`ll have a full service Taliban, good point,it would be a bit tight of me really, especially as I work for Ford and get a good discount, excellent on service parts. Their own oil is pretty impressive and i`ve used it in many other makes and models too. Thanks for the tip Dave, where would I find the sensor on the engine? This sounds very promising as i`ve found out today from him that he wasn`t really using the car much at the time `cos he had a new Jag S-Type.....although he concedes that the Scorp drives far better!!!!! |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by Dave2302 on Oct 12th, 2006, 6:36pm Follow the top hose from the rad and it will go onto a ally housing. In this housing on the n/s is a sensor with one wire. This is for the guage only and not the one. Below is a sensor with two wires this is the Engine Management coolant temp sensor and the one you want. Even if it looks clean, get a small pick and tighten the terminals before replacing the plug. Good Luck. Regards Dave |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by vaughant on Oct 14th, 2006, 3:31pm Brief update all before I pop into work for the night all, tried the sensor and it was already held in by a cable tie?OOOO then DOH! As i was re-connecting it with the motor running i could hear a kind of hissing noise start then stop is i plugged in and out. I may try and whip the plugs out this weekend as they look pretty easy to get at. Thanks again, Vaughan. |

Title: Re: engine smokey, newbie help!!!!! Post by vaughant on Oct 16th, 2006, 10:22pm Hi guy`s, just checked all the plugs and they seem fine, not oily or anything. The car is running on all cylinders as i disconnected the leads individually and it missed but with all leads on it ran lovely. TBH guy`s i`m going to give this car until next week and then i`ll either break it or sell it complete with the low mileage box, mint tyres and mint leather interior as well. EVERYTHING works on this, including the air con, dipping mirror etc. I`d be looking to get my £250 back for it,or the same amount in spares and then maybe let the rest go. |
