Title: reversing lights
Post by armatec on Oct 13th, 2006, 12:28pm
hi all,
a while since ive asked for help on here, but beleive it or not my scorpio (2L auto M reg) has just failed its MOT on 1 reversing light being out.... the drivers side..

the bloke tried changing the bulb but no joy, still not working.. so he failed it..

it was working ok a few weeks ago and ive not done any work in that area , my 1st thoughts are fuse..??
but looking through my owners handbook i cannot see any fuses for the reversing lights...
am i missing something???
many thanks
yours sadly

Hi Kev,
If one light is working but not the other I would say the fault is more likely to be in the wiring.
I would be tempted to pull it apart and check the positive and negative feads with a multimeter or circuit tester
For the sake of the mot you could just run a wire from the working light to the broken one.

It shouldn't matter HOW it works as long as it does (on the MOT)  ;)

Have a read of THIS (http://www.motester.co.uk/mot-cog.html#lights). There's no mention of reversing lights and if they are not 'obligatory' is it a correct reason for a failure?.  :-/

As reversing lights aren't required on a car by law, they shouldn't be an mot failure, esp if you have one working.

I personally think the tester is stringing you a line, I've never had my reversing lights tested before (which was a good job on the old car as they didn't work).

Connector in the rear cluster or break in the wiring loom, nothing more serious ;)

I don't think reversing lights are an MOT fail, mine's passed the last 3 and when I bought it I didn't realise I had a faulty switch until I backed out of a space one day and some irate woman told me I had no lamps and nearly ran her over...

So sorry babe, thought you wanted to be run over ::)

Made do with nudging the shifter up a tad until I got the new autobox dropped in...

Slightly OT but has anyone noticed the amount of new cars where the high level brakelamp works but not the normal ones? Seems to be mainly on newer Vauxhalls (Astras), surely a fail when the car gets to 3 years?

Regards, Bruce.

simmo and paul are correct, well, at least that was the case 2 years ago when i had a pug 205 with reverse lights that didnt work, tester said not a problem , they're not on the test sheet..

There isn't a "test sheet" as such these days it is all computerised with a live feed back to government snooper HQ. The system was installed by siemens a while back and the forms can include just about anything that the tester seems to fancy.

sorry guys pannic over
brother took car to the MOT for me , came back and said it failed on a back light being out.. he didnt leave me the paper work and all i got was the message from him, on checking all the lights the hazard light wasnt working, new bulb and bingo!
took it back after reading about the reverse lights not being on test just said... there you go mate, he DID test the hazard light, and passed it... no mention of my faulty reversing light .

the hazard must have been the fail.
so pannic over, thanks guys
