Title: Auto dip mirror?
Post by harry.m1byt on Oct 15th, 2006, 10:14am
Hi,

I have already read the small amount of information about this on the site. My car had the original removed and was fitted with a basic stick on replacement, leaving the original bracket in place - so I got the correct item from a scrappy.

Not until I got it home did I notice that there is what seems to be oil slopping about between the glass. The upper part is clear (like an air bubble which can be moved) and the lower part a pale gold oil type colour.

Has oil some how got into this, or is the oil intended to be there?

I've plugged it in, the green LED lights dimly, but I can't seem to get any dipping action. To check it I covered the sensor facing forward and shone a torch into rear facing sensor - is this the correct way to test its operation?

It is but the oil means the mirror is no good, thats what happens when they fail

The oil is the liquid that makes the mirror work.

Be careful not to let it drip onto any plastic. The stuff is like 'Alien Blood' ;)

Have you read This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pcmirror.htm). It explains the dangers of leaving it 'in situ' and offers a remedy.

Best advice. Throw it away, and stick with the alternative mirror. This is what I've done. Left the original mounting, but stuck a normal mirror just underneath.

The self dipping mirrors fail due to being left in bright sunlight, (yeah right, as though you're going to drive the car with the mirror inside a paper bag), and Jonnycab is 100% right. DO NOT LET THIS GUNGE DRIP ONTO YOUR CAR. It IS alien blood, melting through everything in its path. Really scary stuff.

The mirrors are a gimmick. Great if they work, but otherwise....a total waste of space.

£60  for the last one I saw !!
