Driving into work this morning and the lights went out on the dash, but I still had dipped headllights. Called the RAC out and he checked all fuses and relays but all seems to be fine there. Then the dipped lights went...aaarrrgh.
I have still got indicators and rear high vis but thats it!
RAC fellah couldnt help and said I need an auto lekky, cheers mate. Can any one shed some light on this emergency before I have to give it to my local Fords to empty my wallet ???

The first place to look is the connector behind the main light switch. The 'pins' overheat and can cause problems.Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/electrical/intbasic/Switch-Light.pdf). If not go to 'Fault Finding' on the home page and check out 'electrical concerns'.

Multiplug to the fusebox? wouldn't be the first time it's happened.

Got it home last night, but also no wipers! Do you wise guys reckon that this is the multiplug to one of the fuse boxes, If this is the case I will have to play with it at the weekend.....weather permiting :(

Could it be water problems in the drivers side (Central) fuse box as lights and wiper fuses are all in that one as are the relays. Is the lid properly secured and the multiplug correctly fitted ....has it been distrurbed lately.? The gentle heat of a hairdryer followed by a spray of WD40 can sometimes cure this type of fault if moisture is the cause. Make sure the area around the box is clear of leaves and debris which can block the drain holes to the engine bay. ;)

Hi guys, here is the up date on what happened. As you recall I had no lights and wipers, and as it turned out no horn either. I managed to contact a decent auto lekky who would come out to my neck of the woods. His name is Ray Smith & his Co is Mobile Vehicle Electrics. Mobile 07860 899448. He is a decent and honest sparker and knows his stuff.
You guys were right on two accounts, the first was the light switch pin plug, he found that quite quickly and drilled out the offending bit and inserted a new pin and slot. At that point the rear lights came on but still no front lights or wipers. Undeterred he went through the whole system again, all fuses were good and all relays were good. So he looked at the main fuse box itself and discovered that the multipin plug was not seated properly due to the RAC bloke fiddling and not understanding that the multipin seats on lugs and is lowered from the lugs not just pushed in. As soon as Ray found this the whole system burst into life!!! Wahey! I had me motah back ;D.
I can recomend this chap for his dogged determination to find the problems and sort them, he knows his way around the scorp systems...(ford trained).
Also thanks to you guys cos you were right as well, but when you have a small problem that is compounded by another it seems impossible to cure! I have given the whole system a goodly spray of WD40 to keep the weather out and just as well at the mo cos its persistantly precipertating as I write.

My next job is to paint the battery plate cos I can see that it is a tad rusty when i was poking about the fuse box. I have given that a good dose of WD40 for the time being, but If the weather is good in the near future I will have the battery off and coat the plate in Kurust. This stuff works wonders, then a propper paint job should do the trick. ;)
I have heard that when the battery has been removed, the engine management system has to "remember" all over again and things run rough for a little while.
Has anyone had experiance of this? and what should I watch for?
I will tape any wires together so I know what goes where and not to miss anything off (belt and braces me)

Pleased you sorted it mate, the multiplug thing happened to mine a while back.

When the battery gets disconnected, the engine managment loses it's settings, takes about 10 miles to relearn them and run smoothly. All it means is that don't get worried if it runs a little odd for the first few miles, it will soon clear up. Only thing I noticed last time on mine was the idle was a bit rougher for the first few miles.

Kurust and some zinc primer should sort the tin worm nicely, did my doors like that last week, still got some rot coming on the insides of the rear arches to sort; better to do it now before it takes the arch with it.

It will just run a little rough for the first few miles, but it will quickly pass. Tickover might be quite rough too.
