Got rid of my cheap Champiro budget tyres yesterday. Put my new Pirelli 6000s on and the difference is amazing.
No more wandering and tramlining and the steering wheel has recentralised itself!
This was the front two wheels only. Looks like the Ventus tyres on the back will need to go as well!
So if you have budget tyres get rid of em!

Fair point, we always overlook the quality of the tyres when laying blame for steering and stability probs.

However the only Pirelli I can afford is their Calendar :-*

I've got a set of Korean (PyongYang's finest ;)) 'Nexen' on the Scorp, typical second hand car tyres from before I bought it but I've got to be honest that they've got a nice tread pattern and handle good at speed, some cheapo tyres (mainly higher profile, 195/60 etc) feel like jelly at 70-80mph but these do drive nice and I've done 10k now on barely a millimetre of tread...

Got the same Pirellis on my 24V...sticks like wotsit to a blanket, but I do live in roundabout city (MK) so tread is wearing! >:(

got a couple of budget tyres on mine, not had a problem, but then mines a lazy TD. the only concern i have with budget tyres is life expectancy i.e. do the sidewalls perish easily etc, if so then its false economy.

Not sure about life expectancy, but the cheapo tyres are all over the place in terms of driving. They have caused me enough grief. I thought my bearings had gone/wishbone broken. Also I couldnt work out why my steering was off centre. But then some budget tyres maybe OK compared to my cheap Champiros

I'd never buy cheapos myself but as they were on the car when I bought it I wouldn't get rid of unless they caused a problem. Like I say, 10k now and no problems, my car gets driven most of the time on fast roads and they handle fine. Tread is good and they hold nice in the wet; that's not an endorsment though.

Perhaps not to be recommended to your Auntie who enjoys scrubbing the sidewalls on the kerb though ;)

I had cheapos when I got the car as well. What I didn't realise was the amount of problems they were causing. My only regret is not getting ridder of them sooner!

spose it depends on what and how you drive, if i had a 24v i'd pay the extra..

Dear All
I'd echo Taliban's comment but would also say that in any car ESPECIALLY a performance car the tyres are the ONLY thing connecting you to the road so buy the best you can afford. ;)
Also you need to be aware of potential insurance problems if you have an accident and the tyres are not the correct approved speed related tyres for that vehicle....you have been warned :'(

My hearse had retreads on it when I got it, changed em straight away for P6000s when I got the front discs all the pads and suspension bushes replaced. only cost £400 all in at Kwik Fit.

I'm currently slamming my local Ford Garage in another thread, but the Kwik Fit in Wellingborough can't be faulted.

I had some cheapo tyres on then when I bought the Scorp. Got rid of them very fast!
Am an ex-rally driver so i like to drive a little quicker than allowed ;) and coming ot of corners with full throttle is scary, even with a 2.0 16V. driving on Goodyears now, love them.

I fitted 4 new Goodyear 17" 225 F1's on mine just before I went to France in August. Seeing as we only got as far as Paris before the auto problems, and having been towed around for a bit, they still look like new!! Haven't been able to wheelspin today though even in the wet and they do stick well. I only paid £75.00 each for them but had to fit them myself at my mates place.... good job he is a tyre shop as well as a mechanic!

Before i put the mondy wheels on my td with a decent set of tyres i had the dialaphone alloys with budget budget tyres on and i don't think any of them were the same make :-/ The sidewalls were k-nackered but the actual tread would not wear down regardless of how much sideways driving ;D They were lethal in the wet, pull out from a side road above 2k revs and the back end would step out a fair old bit.

Now with michalins on they spoil all my fun ;)

i paid £25 a corner for avon zz3 225 50 16 rrp £110 each at local garage ;D ;D ;D
