although my new ultima is showing its 149000 miles very well, the gearbox has a distinct whine and is pretty notchy going into first, inro second and third.

could it be a good move to look for another box (2.3) i can live with the whine but the notchy gears are a pain although i feel i could adjust the linkage may make some difference any thoughts.

If it's a manual then Kjetil is the chap to ask ;)

Notchy gears are a sure sign of wear (well, at least they are in the Mondeo :)), the whine is a bearing if I remember rightly.

Gearbox overhaul time me thinks ;).

I'm thinkin more along the lines of clutch overhaul.

With mine the spigot bearing had almost been worn away, and was causing the g/box axle to run more or less freely inside the flywheel, which caused a whirr/whine depending on engine revs.

Also the pressure plate was badly damaged which caused an uneven pressure against the slave cylinder which again caused the cylinder to partially seize, making it next to impossible to change gears above 2.5-3k rpms. The clutch never really uncoupled as it should, so gear changes were rough even if I had low revs. Sounds a lot like your symptoms.

After doing a complete clutch overhaul (changing all plates, cylinder and spigot bearing), all noises has gone away and I can do two-finger gear changes again up to 6000 rpms ;D

hi there,

the clutch was replaced before i bought it so it possibly cant be that, im thinking about adjusting the linkages if poss, seeing as though the box had to come off to change clutch, maybe its not adjusted properly, thinking about it the gear stick doesnt sit in the place i would expect by this I mean there is a lot of stick travel from 1st to 2nd and 3rd etc........ any thoughts on this!!! ???

have you a receipt for this
if yes to those, take it back under warranty.

Maybe a long shot, but this could perhaps be something as easy as the people who did the clutch didn't seat the gear stick linkage properly.

Don't think that would make it whirr or whine though, but it could account for the stick travel.

Second drawing on the 5th page shows the linkage.

yeah i have receipts for the clutch it was done by the garage who looked after the car for its entire life.

ah that drawing is what i need i think ill have a look under tommorrow, hope its not raining................ ::)

Have you checked the oil ???

Low oil causes them faults + the wrong type of oil too.

i take it there is no dipstick for the gearbox on these........ so check via the filler plug?? but where is it???

also what engine oil shall i use bearing in mind its got 149k on the clock ;D

From memory the filler is on the side, just remove a plug and top it up until it over flows. Or you could check it first by poking a bit of wire in to check the level.

Do it with the car level.

Yep, left hand side when looking towards the front. Should be an allen screw located in a recess (iirc) so may be difficult to spot.

Yeah you got it.

there is 2 allen key plugs, one at the bottom to drain it the other a 3rd of the way up to fill it & check the level.
Undo that plug & the oil should be level or just comming out on a level surface.
