Title: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by taliban on Oct 28th, 2006, 1:14pm
dead car! (2.5TD)

changed the headlight bulbs yesterday, started car, new blue bulbs great, everything ok, washed car, set alarm as normal.
this morning, unlocked from remote, key in ignition, nothing lights up on dashboard? turn the key, starter motor turns, engine doesnt fire up, still no dashboard lights. interior lights work including dash light, sidelights work, not dipped beam, leccy seats work, radio works, windows dont, chime works to say lights on.
not too sure what fuse to check, but checked 80amp main fuse, glow plug fuse and a few others, all seem fine, cant check relays, dont know how too and dont have any spare to swap.
any ideas?

i washed the car and it rained through the night, but battery cover in place and the fuse boxes are dry internally....

Still sounds like water in one or both fuseboxes.

it does to me too, but surely that'd blow a fuse or two?

As far as I know, usually not. The water makes connections the copper plates in the box, but the resistance should still be too high to blow a fuse (keeping the current down).

ah ha, i see, right, battery is now out ready to go on charge. battery tray suprisingly good, no corrosion etc, battery area cleaned and dried, copious amounts of wd40 sprayed all round fuse boxes etc. will charge battery overnight and see what transpires in the morning.
will now go shopping by motorbike, was going to cancel my shopping trip, but now have to go to a jewellers to see how much a new glass is for my sector chronograph after i just chipped it removing the battery........ :'(

what a day so far, thank god my team west ham arent playing till tomorrow, they'd only lose......

The fuses for the dipped beams and for the windows are in the central (drivers side) fuse box. Fuse 4,5,25 and 26. Is the connector properly seated?. Has a connector been disturbed in the engine bay whilst dealing with the bulb change?.

the bulbs are actually very good cossie, and everything worked when i went to bed, so it does sound like water ingress. battery out and on charge now, might be worth me taking the fuse boxes out to clean and dry them properly.....

right then battery charged, fuse box bays cleaned, hoovered, both areas dried with ex wifes hairdryer (she did have some uses  ::)). at first still the same symtoms, but car fired up under compression, was really rattly for 20 seconds then smoothed out and as it did i got the dash board back, then the windows, then indicators, rear lights, rear fog lights, air con, but no front lights at all except indicators and no wipers???

Triple check the fusebox connectors again. They can seem like they are seated properly when in fact they aren't.

Just what I was going to say. Have a read of THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1161073691;start=0#0). In particular reply no 6. The symptoms are so similar there has to be a connection. (No pun intended !). ;)

So,  to recap,  I'm slow on the uptake,  :-[    what  caused  the  original   problem again ?

Title: Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by taliban on Oct 29th, 2006, 5:35pm
i can only put it down to water ingress floppy, next to the main fuse box between the bodywork was a mass of leaves, twigs, moss etc which was all very damp.
the thing i find strange is ford know about the problem hence the battery cover, but theres no cover for the main fuse box?

Title: Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've ordered 300 bags of silica gel to put in the fuseboxes, hopefully that will keep them dry for a while  ;)

I have been reading this post with interest and thought all along that it was the multiplug seating.............cos the same thing happened to me two weeks ago. RE, NO LIGHTS!
When the mention of no lights and wipers came up, hmmm. I know this one I thought.
But I reckon that the first problem was water ingress dur to washing. I have found that if the car faces slightly up hill, water can cause missfiring or non-start. Been there, done that. But as a precaution now I spray the electrics with WD40 after its had a d**ned good thrashing with the bucket and sponge.
Also as a further precaution, check that the drain holes around the NS fusebox/ battery are clear of leaves and cack, particulally if you park up near trees. I discovered to my horror that I had around half a pint of water swilling around this area due to a blocked hole.........ooh matron :-*
p.s. mines a glenfiddich, pure entertainment in a glass.
