Greetings Fellow Scorpionists!

Winter has finally reached Finland... brr... And so I had to put
the winter tires with spikes under the beast.

Already during summer I noticed that when I was overtaking or
otherwise standing on the gas pedal, the
rear end of the car felt slightly sluggish and tends to swing
a bit sideways. Like if it would like to swing her tail to
left/right. During summer it's not bothering so much but
now the roads are on ice and you actually don't need
much of a swing on it to get it spinning around.

The rear wheels are disappearing into the chassis, see:

but the shock absorbers and springs should be ok.

When I do a search, I see a lot of talk about the bushes -
could someone translate that to me - in general what do
you mean with "bushes" ? I've been to Australia and a
man can go and walk in the bushes there - I'm a Fin, so
forgive me for my lack of English language.

My tires are now brand new Nokian 4 winter tires.
There should not be be too much tolerance in the
streering and streering has recently been aligned
(toe in/out adjustment)

Any ideas?

Hi there,

your English is considerably better than my Finnish :)

Basically, suspension bushes are used where the cars chassis meets a suspension component. These bushes reduce noise and vibration. They can and do wear out and many people replace them with uprated bushes, often polyurethane bushes.

Have a check of your stabiliser bar:

the rear shock absorber bushes:

and check the shock absorber mounting bolt (found in the boot, under the carpet) is torqued up to 85nm.

PS Keep an eye on your rear tye wear as uneven wear patterns could point to the hub nut being loose, hub failure or wheel bearing wear.

I can't see it being rear bushes, See example HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/rearsuspension.gif) #6 etc. The springs on the rear look as if they are weak to me.
These BUSHES (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/frontsuspension.gif) #7 on the front are the normal ones that seem to go all of the time.
As for it wobbling then I have not got a clue without seeing the car, Others might have an idea though.

How about the large bushes (#2) in the picture of rear suspension?

Causes similar symptoms in Sierra if those are worn out. After all the rear assembly is not that different on Sierra and Scorpio.

Hi there,

I had asimilar problem with my scorp . When you braked or accelerated the back end appeared to swerve to one side. It was caused by a worn main bearing in the wheel hub. There was no noise from the bearing but when it was stripped it virtualy fell appart !

Thanks all!

Very good advice all. I'll go on and do more investigating based on the
ideas you have proposed. I have already changed the drivers side
wheel bearings, they were rather worn out. The passeger side bearings
are still in the package, but will be changed a.s.a.p.

Wobbling mystery solved, but not sorted.

I think most of the BUSHES are dead. At least the front bushes in the lower arms
are very bad (steering wheel has started to rumble violently) they are really
worn. Think it's the same in the rear, but haven't checked them.

Looking for new bushes for the front lower arms, couldn't find them easily, so
I guess it's a "go to the nearest Ford dealer and give all you've got to them"
case then :-/
