Title: replacement Inlet Manifold 2.3 ultima 1997
Post by slimspider on Nov 7th, 2006, 11:06am
Just after some advice as heard from the mechanic who is fixing my 2.3 ultima that a new inlet manifold form Ford is £242.04 and also need gaskets each end apparently so wonder if there is alternative source other than Ford (prob a stupid question) or has anyone got one for sale.

They are pretty few & far between, but you do get them coming up second hand from time to time.
I think there is one on Ebay at the moment for a buy it now price of £100 (bit expensive).

The only problem with buying a second hand one is, that as they are getting old & worn now, then it may not last very long & you may be throwing good money away.
But then again...you may get lucky :)

Yep just as Jonny says, If you can find one cheap second hand then go for it, best place is probably on here.

ebay has a couple just now for around £110-120 posted (i put the links in your parts wanted thread)

I thought Ford were dearer than that for them, try fordpartsuk, they will be cheaper than Ford dealer I would expect

Title: The END!! Inlet Manifold 2.3 ultima 1997 - advice
Post by slimspider on Nov 13th, 2006, 11:17am
The mechanic says it is not worth continuing as when fitted the new inlet manifold he cannot keep the water level up or something like that.  He did ask me if the car had overheated and I did not notice anything until steam pouring out of the bonnet but was doing about 80 - 90 a the time..so not really looking at dials.  But I had the car for 8 years and spent a lot on it recently with replacement gear box and new rear bumper so as the inlet manifold had cracked I gave go ahead to buy a new inlet manifold from Ford and try to mend it but he says not worth continuing any more as water leaking may be the head gasket damaged....  so now my advice needed is where is best place to sell this car now - ebay?  It is drivable he says but only for a short distance if I runit from cold and keep the heater on - so I can get it home and my wife will have her own way and get a smaller car....
But I will be back as I love these scorpios....  where else can you get full leather seats and comfort etc like these cars..  If Highlander reads this... I will return your ariel parts (many thanks) I had just got the radio and CD changer working great again.... plus I have an unuesed rubber belt - like a fan belt - in the garage that may be of use... to you so send me your postal address.   :'(

Bad luck mate, I live in constant fear of mine falling victim to the same fate :'(

You say the garage says it's not worth fixing, how much is it going to cost you to get it sorted? If you know the car then surely it's worth more to you than the £1000-£1500 you'd get stung for another one. What's the year, condition and mileage like? A mint Scorpio isn't worth a fortune these days and a non runner/minor MOT faliure is worth next to nothing. You've hit the two major weakpoints on the 2.3, the gearbox and the head/manifold, surely it would be worth considering getting it fixed?

If you do want another Scorpio then keep yours as a donor for the 'less than perfect' bits of the new one, 2 Scorps are better than 1 as they say :D.

I'd try and hang onto it, better the evil you know and all that ;)

Good luck. Regards, Bruce.
