Title: engine wont restart
Post by ml on Nov 9th, 2006, 5:59pm
hi,

bit puzzled as to why my engine will not fire up (2.0i 16v DOHC).

Done the following repairs:
1) replaced heat damaged fuel shut off loom
2) replaced engine temp sender (twice)
3) battery was drained so has been recharged
4) replaced oil filter (to access last 2 plugs on fuel shut off loom)

thing is the car restarted first time. but had to turn it off to fill up coolant system. now it wont restart - even tried jump start.

any ideas? :-/
mark

does it crank and not fire up or does it not turn over?

Fuel cut off switch in the boot? if its turning over

yeah its turning over but not firing.
will look at fuel shut off switch, but wouldnt that have inhibited starting up initially?

Petrol??  ;D

Is the battery all connected up properly and healthy??
They can seem ok and turn the engine fine but not start it, even with jump leads

Had a simliar (although intermittent) problem on mine, and that disappeared after replacing the battery.

You might want to do a read out of the voltage before and under cranking (use the diagnostics menu in the trip computer. Hold for 5 seconds or so and then press the button until you get a battery read out)

try basics;
check plugs to see if they're wet with petrol, if not fuel not getting through. if they're wet check quality of spark, clean and dry plugs first, also as you crank it over, petrol should spray out the spark plug holes. if they're wet with petrol and have a good spark, is air getting through? petrol on its own its not fuel, it needs oxygen to burn.
is battery good enough? it needs to be a minimum of 12 volts to turn the scorp....

Just a thought.
I also had a simular problem and was left straned once.
It was traced to fule pump relay (not sure which one it was, but it was in the fuse box by the battery) had a dry joint. Repaired said relay and had no further problems.

well got up this morning and put on my best boiler suit, went out to the car all tooled up. prepared meself for some tinkering & head scratching.
Put the key in ignition and she turned over and fired up ......took her for a short drive....and (at the risk of speaking too soon!) shes been fine & starting up 1st time every time.

I think my car must be female.....suppose youve gotta give em some attention & maintenance sometimes.

anyway, fingers crossed as they say.

The recent spell of cold weather has no doubt 'tested' a few batteries. As,certainly here in the south, it is much milder today could this be the reason for the 'cure'. As has been said these cars need a lot of power to start them even if they do turn over readily. Try a battery diagnostic check to see what state the battery is in. Could be an early sign of the battery going.
