Title: estate tailgate wont open with key
Post by Andy on Nov 15th, 2006, 11:21pm
Hi, I've got a '96 Scorpio Ultima estate, and for some time now (months) I've only been able to open the tailgate with the remote fob but not the key.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so is there a solution to it? :-/

The usual cause is 'gunge' and the lock barrel needs to be given a liberal dose of WD40 and then keep pushing/turning the centre section with the key. Have  you tried another key as it could also be wear in the lock or on the key.

Thanks, Simmo, I'll have a good go with WD40 tomorrow.  The key is pretty new, and isn't showing any signs of wear, so I'll spend some time working the lock. it could very well be a worn lock i just hope it isnt worn out!

Andy, if it is the actual lock barrel that is worn it is possible to replace the 'internals' for about £12. Have a read of THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm).

Cheers, for that, I've saved the link for later just in case.

I've just had my Scorpio MOTd yesterday also, and it has failed on the rear offside wheel bearing, a rear bulb, and the two front brake hoses, with an advisory on the front discs and pads.

I've ordered the parts, and as soon as they arrive I'll be fixing her up. I'm actually very relieved that she only failed on these parts as I thought the rear bushes were shot. but it has turned out to be the wheel bearing.

There is a link, HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rhubs.htm) if you want it, for the rear wheel bearing. Also the main thing is you will need a 'wind back' tool for the rear pistons as they DO NOT push back they need to be turned and the torque for the rear bearing on completion is 200ft/lbs,way beyond the normal DIY torque wrench. The wind back tool is cheap and can be bought from Draper stockists amongst others.

Thank you very much for your helpful advice, Simmo.  I am indebted to you! I hadn't realised that the rear pistons wind back as opposed to pushing back, and I will now purchase an appropriate tool ready for the job. (Currently looking at this page http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Abs-Brake-Servicing-Tool-22349-Draper-179?sc=9&category=111

I have tried WD40 and plenty of wiggling of the key in the tailgate lock, but it just doesn't do anything at all. In fact i can't feel any resistance on the key, as if it isn't pushing against anything, so I am now beginning to suspect that it requires a full rebuild.

It has always been a little temperamental ever since purchasing the car in March, but has now got worse, so that the only way I can access the back of the car is with the remote.  If the remote fails i will not be able to get in the back! Worrying to say the least.

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

Glad to help. The Draper unit I and others have is Part 52334 at www.draper.co.uk. Just a variation on the one you show but with various' options' of peg locations. It is a 3/8" drive cube. You can use other implements but experience tells me that its well worth the few quid!!. The other point you need to note from the article by Snoopy is that the old bearing nuts are smaller than the ones supplied with the new bearing. The 'old' ones are 32mm but the new ones are 41mm. The latter is a 3/4" drive, Draper 26669,and the converter to use with a 1/2" ratchet is 19605. That's why Snoopy talks of buying  separate nuts from Ford.  I don't wish to put you off but it's not much fun when the car's apart and you haven't got the right tools for the job on a Sunday morning!!. Having done the job, and used threadlock, you need to re-check the torque setting after a couple of hundred miles as they have been known to 'bed down' even after correctly torquing up the nut. Good luck.

I have had the same problem with the boot lock... The key seems to intermittently open it or not and when it doesnt - I cannot even open it by pressing the button so what I have to do is to use the key in the drivers door and lock and unlock the central locking once or twice that seems to allow it to work again.  I tend to only use the key in one of the other doors and unlock the central locking then push the button on the boot by hand

I have now successfully replaced the rear o/s wheel bearing, and fitted new discs and pads front and rear, as the old ones were looking worn, especially the rears.  The help pages on this site, together with helpful advice form Simmo, made the job much easier, so a big thank you to everyone who has posted useful help on here. Its invaluable.

The usual woes ensued during the job, of course, mainly bolts that don't really want to come out, but do in the end, after much cussing and battered fingers.

I now only need to fit two new front brake hoses and I can then get the Scorpio re MOT'd in time for December. I'm investing in a brake pipe flaring kit to sort this job out (£49 al in form carpartsdirect), as the old pipes don't want to disconnect form the flexible hoses with damage. Typical. And its only 9 years old!

I took it to National Tyres last Friday, and they failed it on the two front brake hoses, the wheel bearing and a rear bulb, with and advisory on the front discs and pads.

They quoted me silly money for the parts and for fitting them (£383 to be exact), so I decided to have a go at the job myself, with my brother helping me, as he's a better  home mechanic than me!

I bought all my parts from http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/index.cfm off the Web, including all the discs and pads, for £228 all in, which I was happy with, and they delivered quick.

I'll keep you posted as to the outcome of the retest. I hope it sails through now as I love driving the old girl.

;D
