Title: Can't get stereo out!!
Post by AdamS on Nov 16th, 2006, 4:16pm
I know this sounds a bit pathetic, but does anyone know of particular problems removing a 5000RDS stereo unit from the Scorpio (mine's a '98 Ghia X)?

Having fitted a new battery recently, i then naturally discovered i didn't have the radio code!  ::) My local Ford dealer said all they need is the serial number from the sticker on the top of the unit and can look up the code for me. Trouble is, 3 of their workshop guys can't get the stereo out and neither can i! I have the correct stereo removal tool and have removed plenty of units over the years without any problems, but the unit will unclip and slide out about an inch or so and then seems to catch on something and will move no further.

Can anyone suggest anything, please, before i bite the bullet and cough up £80 for them to pull the dashboard apart - i'm fed up with having no music!!  :-[

Thanks very much in advance!

Adam.

P.S. - Thanks to those who diagnosed that i needed a new battery a few months back after my instruments kept re-setting on startup - you were right!

If you do get it out we can sort out the code for you - free! PM from details!  ;)

Sounds like something is catching - all I can think of is the plastic rail it slots onto or a cable caught somewhere!

You can just about get behind the radio from over the trim near the firewall - but it is quite tight there.

You could also remove the screws for the dash and pull it forward a small bit without removing it compleatly!

Dash removal is a pice of proverbial...

You don't have to take it all out either just enugh to get your hand in and feel round the stereo..

If you're  lucky and have the original  Ford  Audio  Booklet  that  came with the  new car,    the radio  code  should  be  on the first page.

Radio sometimes gets stuck behind the fascia panel, mine did exactly the same as yours the last time. You'll need to remove the screws holding the panel and the pull the radio with it loosened.

I love plastic fastenings ;)

I have taken the spring 'holding clips' off the side of my 7000RDS. The radio fits very snugly, and they are a complete pain when you want to remove the unit. Just take them off, and then you can get to the radio whenever you need to within seconds.

I don't think any self-respecting scroat would be interested in such a low tech model anyway, so theft isn't an issue.  :)

Had the same problem, If you pull the keys away from each other and wiggle the unit it should just come out.
No need to remove the fascia

My old Granada had this problem.
A careful wiggle of the keys (removal ones) and the stereo itself sorted it. Took me ages to work out how to do it.

Mind you, this Scorpio one's easier... luckily.
